A Mech is a tricky thing: Weird shape, lots of moving parts. Hard to implement.

A tank on the other hand is just a box with a moving turret on top.
A helicopter is a levitating thingy.
An infantryman or a Power Armour would just be an ovoid speck with two moving legs.

If you could, would you play a tank? Maybe an AC/20-equipped Von Luckner in Canyon Network? A Harasser hover-tank in Crimson Strait? An artillery-piece in Alpine Peaks?

If you could, would you play a helicopter, darting back and forth around the monoliths of volcanic stone in Tourmaline Desert? Or hunting Mechs through the streets of River City?

Would you play infantry, slow and next to no hitpoints, but invisible to radar and only visible with naked eye and IR? Looking up to the Mech towering above you and thinking: "I'm gonna f**k up your leg." Hell, turn them into motorized or jump-infantry to make them faster.

How about a dropship, hovering across the landscape like a zeppelin? One player steers it, other players man the turrets.

If you could, would you?

Maybe someone else wants to be in fodder to be blown up by 'Mechs, but I'll stick with the kings of the battlefield, thanks.

I think all of these troop types would be fine as expendable AI units controlled through the Battlegrid by the commander.

I voted yes to most, but, what needs to be remembered: In MechWarrior, Mechs REPLACED standard warfare in just about all aspects:

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/BattleMech

Couldn't be said better than the second paragraph of the overview:
A single 'Mech can easily destroy a city block. A BattleMech's only true equal is another 'Mech—artillery, aircraft, and tanks are disadvantaged against them without BattleMech support or a strong advantage in numbers.

getting to use elementals would be nice but we have to be able to change there load outs like on TT. an were going to need to add 32 player slots for the elemental/power armor players.

i can already see the rage face when a star of elementals lag an atlas then use there battle claws to hitch a ride and cut it apart with there small lassers

I'm here to pilot 'mechs, not some inferior vehicle type.

I always thought it would be amusing to pilot a Hetzer in this game, but we'd need a much larger scale to make other vehicles an option.

I voted abstain on everything but infantry/battlearmor
Those would probably need tanks to help bridge the gap, but for some reason I wanna be the little guy running along side the giant mech :)

The one thing that I would love to pilot in this game is the specific one thing that PGI can NOT put INTO the game.

And that would be the LAMs. (Land Air Mechs). Due to every LAM in the Battletech Universe being part of the Unseen (specifically copies of Robotech and Macross's Veritechs.)

Even if their armor was as weak as a Locusts. I would pilot that thing just to be able to swoop around the battle-field. Drop down to the ground in Mech mode and help out my team-mates. I would enjoy that to no end.

No. If I wanted to play Battlefield, I would.

LAMs are another story, but unfortunately both a legal impossibility and an engineering nightmare.

I would love to see this if it can be implimented in terms of larger battlefields and larger battles. 8 mechs, 8 land/air units, 16 power armors, something like that. more excitement

Hmm. Helicopters would tempt me... But probably not in BT, I don't want to play target practice.

Anyone know any good and recent helicopter sims. Ideally with urban warfare?

If 2008 is recent enough, DCS: Black Shark is about as complex and simmy it gets. Don't know if there's any urban warfare though.

Edit: Found this wonderful quote on the wikipedia page (emphasis mine):

Quote

The simulated cockpit contains all switches of the real helicopter and is almost fully interactive. Most buttons and switches can be operated with the mouse and/or by a touchscreen. Additionally there are around 500 keyboard-commands, with the majority giving the player direct control over those cockpit-switches.

Well, I need less sim and more combat, to be honest. I just like the idea of flying close to the ground and around obstacles. Like asteroid field battles tend to be the most fun in space combat games.

But back to topic...

MW:LL tried a combined arms approach, IIRC. I am not sure if it wouldn't be ultimately the better game, but I have to say if I have the choice between a mech and any non-agile-space-combat-capable craft, I choose mech. And even if I have the choice between mech and space combat fighter (or "aerospace fighter?"), I would often choose mech.

This ain't Battlefield..

Of course it would be epic to run a complete planetary operation with dropships, infantry/aerospace fighters / tanks etc.

But it doesn't sound as MW:O, but more like a Mod for Battlefield :)

Me? Yes, yes, yes, yes! And, "great idea" to 5th quesiton, too.

In fact, i went - some say, - a great length asking for these and more in http://mwomercs.com/...eeded-to-do-so/ topic. I recieved mightily positive feedback there, as well.

Sounds like we indeed need such things in MWO, and we need them alot!
