The Stomping Dead.
"*Distant Screams*
Aaaahhhhhhhhhh!
It had been years since Shaun heard his friend Ed's voice, and sounds like he's in pain. Determined to get find the source, Shaun suited up and headed to one of his oldest MechBays, grabbing his Stalker out of storage to investigate. As he removed the cobwebs from the cockpit, Shaun noticed something strange. His dashboard hologram flickered, revealing a handprint of blood on the primary view screen. He powered up and the cockpit became illuminated. To Shaun's horror, there was blood everywhere! Poised to begin his search for his friend, a familiar phrase bellowed over throughout the cockpit: "Reactor Online... Sensors Online..." It was Ed's voice.
Is he some kind of ghost? Has the communication array been thrown out of whack?"
"one of his oldest mechbays"?
Am i missing something here or don't mechwarriors have one mech?
Is this PGI throwing out lore to maybe make it more palatable when they introduce queuing up mechs to use for "dropship mode", or choosing what mech to take before a match depending on the terrain the player will be fighting on thereby making balanced builds fairly redundant?

I think you are trying to read entirely too much into a little sales fluff.

Well if someone wrote a Star Wars story where Darth Vader was using a blue lightsaber i'd assume that either there would be an explanation or the writer didn't know what he was writing about

Exactly,
The purpose of a lobby mode (while at the expese of some mech balance) is also allow the dropping group the ability to work on the overall mech balance to creat a better whole.

What Bilbo said and uhm does that mean you only own one mech as a player?

So can each mech not have its own "character pilot"?
