So folks, I still haven't decided on my first heavy mech to buy. Cataphract and Orion are in the game, though I am biased toward Orion based on the looks. With that in mind I dabbled a little bit on smurfy and came up with this build for Orion:

This is more of a workhorse design, as IMO, it allows me to do some damage at long range and still be pretty effective at shorter ranges. I don't want to play as an LRM boat, I would have gotten myself a Catapult straight away.
I tried some trial mechs that were brawlers, and in about 80% of the games I played with them I would stay near the front line where the others were slugging it out with the enemy at long range and after a couple of minutes of being a fifth wheel in such a setup with no one moving to closer ranges, I would try to flank the enemy or find some stragglers. In the end I would be ganged up on and dead as my mates would still be on their side of the map trading PPC and laser bolts long range from the same position. Rest of the games I fared better in brawlers because the games were played on missions where there was enough cover to allow me to get to the enemy and/or escape from a counterattack. Still that was enough to sour the whole brawler only mechs for me.
In any case, I'm open to suggestions.

Do you want ECM? Because the CTF is getting an ECM variant soon.
If that's not a decision breaker for you, then it's gonna come down to style of play. The Orion is land based, and plays very much like an Atlas. While the CTF is jump capable (at least 1 or 2 variants can), and usually has higher mounts for some of it's weapons. While the Orion has low mounts on virtually all weapons.

For JJ or walker only mechs it's a toss for me. I used trial mechs with JJs, but used JJ mostly for easier terrain navigation and getting to spots for ambushes. In fights I never used JJs IRC.
As for lower weapon mounts on Orion compared to Cataphract, I was looking at their pictures and judging by them Orion's arms are higher that Catapract's arm weapon mounts, while they both have the balistic weapon mount on the right torso at the same place. What am I missing?

Some cataphract variants have high (as in REALLY high) energy mounts in the STs.

I've enjoyed driving the Orion K than I did the cataphract I had, dunno why though. I'm not sure what other two orions to get though, any advice? I was thinking the Orion M at least but not sure between the other two.
