I try to be casual, taking fun non-min/max builds and goofing off to relax. But the matchmaker puts me against competitive players and skilled lances of 733Cs, DDCs, dual gauss or AC/40 heavies, light swarms, etc. If my casual gaming results in loss after loss I'll switch to a competitive build and play seriously. After a few games of serious play I get bored with having to play the same builds over and over in carry mode, and I log out. The next time I log in it starts over again. Each gaming session where I feel forced into playing competitively using a min/max build I lose a little more interest in playing this game over the long-term.
If I'm lucky on a good night I'll mostly fight against 4-mans and PUGs that are also casual. Then I can relax in my fun builds without being a hindrance to the folks I drop with and whoever else is on my team.
Some players/lances play super competitively and will only run min/max builds because to them fun means rolling the enemy and winning, nothing else seems to matter. Not hating them for it, I know everyone has a different idea of fun. I just wish I could unplug from that idea of fun from time to time but the matchmaker doesn't allow for it. I suppose I could make a second account and only run joke builds. Hopefully it would keep me away from the more-competitive types (or at least the competitive types that are actually good players). It's just not my style. This post turned into a bit of a whine, but whatever...
