It would help if your targetting reticle indicated that your arm was obstructed.
Mechs with fully articulated arms could raise them up to shoot higher targets in BT lore. Not in MWO though. Those fully articulated arms operate like you have a paralyzed shoulder.

How come our Mechs cannot raise their arms? What sense is there in having actuators if we cannot have movement???

Because... because?
Though I think PGI's argument was 'to complex for new players'... Ironic as that is with 3rd person view and ghost heat...

Try putting an AC10 or a Gauss rifle on the Bmaster and watch all your shots hit the ground. Its worse than the CTF-4X...
I have GR in my Battlemaster... No problem because I recognized the "problem" and don't shoot it when I know it will hit only dirt.

Probably because it looks stupid in real life, so they decided against makeing the Atlas a Ghetto mech?

Triple AC/2 I never hit the ground, don't try to ridge hump with a Battlemaster unless its an energy build. Terrain is OP, work with it.!

Adapt dude!
Ballistic is just fine...if you brawl with it. Does not have ideal Snipe/Ridge Hump placement. But then, the BLR DOES have 4-6 excellently placed Energy Hard Points for that role. Tis a reason mine have at least 2 PPC or ER LArge Lasers (or both).
On the other hand those high points are not that great if you have pesky Lights humping your ankle. That is where the nice low mount ballistic and right arm energy comes in.
Not every Mech need to be a dedicated hill humper!

Relatively the guns are higher mounted than a cataphract really. The only reason it feels worse is because of the super high position of the cockpit which kinda makes you overestimate the height of your arm.
That and the energy points are really high up and the 1G has 2 of them at cockpit height. The 1D has 1 up there.
