I can find it by googling it, but where in the maze of menus are you supposed to organically reach the event (tournament) page?

go to the announcement forum and look up the event, or alternatively click the link below:
http://mwomercs.com/...97#entry5239397
that contains the link to that events tournament page, unfortunately there is not just 1 tournament page, but there seems to be a new page generated for each event

There are 2 pages that interest you:
https://mwomercs.com/tournaments
this one is for everything that you need to activate anyhow, like the current lootbox event
https://mwomercs.com...type=challenges
this one contains info on current (if any) and past challenges.*
These adresses do not change.
EDIT:
* challenges are usually do x dmg in total, get x kills in total, etc. and their rewards are applied automatically.
A word of warning - at least for me, keeping the challenges tab open in the background during an event steals me few fps, might be because of my old PC, but still, be warned.

Also, note that there is a delay between a match and when the reward is available. PGI says it's about 15 minutes. Also, for some crazy reason PGI the matches aren't always simply listed one after the other. (I think maybe they're using Bistro Math.)

They were some time ago as far as I remember, but not anymore
