I read on some old post that you extracted the defaultprofile.xml from Gamedata.pak (works)
and then changed a line(doesnt work)

The game doesnt seem to recognice my new defaultprofile.xml that i put under
: MechWarrior Online\Game\libs\config

libs/config is new to my system so im thinking it has been moved?

Anyone done this and know what the problem is?

An easier method would be downloading a macro program like autohotkey and setting up a script like:
$6::
Loop
{
	if GetKeyState("7", "P")
		break
	Send 6 ;
}
return

Which would fire weapon group six until you hit '7' on your keyboard. Less likely to break your game than rummaging around in the gamefiles editing things.

Honestly, the most reliable way is to use evilC's AutoHotKey script

http://evilc.com/joo.../autohotkey/mwo

Make sure to run the Script as Administrator

As long as you are aware that TAG-ing your own teammates works against them, it uncloaks them to the enemy team and helps enemy missile launchers lock onto your teammates.

No...no it doesn't. That is like saying NARCing your team would send telemetry to your enemy. It doesn't work that way. TAG is a targeting laser that sends feedback to your mech on the target's information (speed, direction, distance...etc) your targeting computer then compiles all that information and sends it via communication channels to the rest of your team. Why on Earth would your mech send information to the enemy team?

Even easier, low-tech way - when I run TAG, I set it to the 6th weapon group and stick a paperclip between my 6 and 7 keys to jam the 6 key down B)

I just set TAG as group 2 and hold down that mouse button when I need it. Doesn't seem that hard to me, but whatever works for you.

I've used a coin myself but same concept.

This is actually the best option. To be honest, you don't always want it on, as it CAN be seen by enemy mechs and can give away your position, so it's good to have an "Off" option.

I like lights who run around with TAG permanently on, makes it easier to see them when theyre trying to hide around a corner.

Some of us who use flight controllers have been known to map the tag to the trim control, which is typically a slider or other similar "always on" switch. Mine doesn't have this feature, however a cheap workaround is to assign the tag to ALL your groups, so no matter what you fire, your tag goes off.

Not as good an idea though, because you need to be able to keep the TAG on even when not firing.

Actually, the TAG effect will remain on for 4 seconds after being "painted" by the beam. Also, if I get a solid lock with my LRM's, I just hold the button down to chainfire that group, so the tag stays on pretty much continually.

I tie my tag to machine guns and AC weapons to give me a tracer effect for accuracy sake.. <its a poor eyesight and bad ping workaround>.. however if i'm running a tag I always have it on an on/off dedicated button.

Did not know about the 4 second thing...that makes a huge difference. Never used a Tag (not sure I even own one) as I didn't think I could keep it on them long enough to matter....

Hmm... tried this on my JS. Didn't use trim control (axis-z?) but used speed control slider and mapped it to weapon group 6. Loaded a mech with TAG into test area and set group 6 to the TAG. Slider on center... TAG off. Slider moved to either + or - from center and TAG stays on. Moving slider back to center turns TAG off.

Thanks for the info that prompted this test. I'm going to keep/use it. Maybe others will find this useful also.

Most of my tag mechs only have 3 weapons groups. Usually lasers, missles and tag. I usually put Lasers on mouse button 1, tag on mouse button 2 and missles on my weapon group 6. I've changed my keybind for missles to the F key since my finger rests on this key anyway. Missles don't need the twitch reaction to fire as lasers so this works well for me.

TAG always on is generally a bad idea. It's sort of like a big ol' kick me sign on your mech.

I agree completely. It's just that I can turn it on, forget about having to hold a key or a mouse/JS button down, freeing my non-nimble fingers for other tasks. :P A quick reset of the slider and it's off again.
