So that is one thing, and then secondly ... Medium role hasn't been defined because unless you want to be a one gun sniper there really isn't a good role because any other role would be better suited with a heavy or assault (in brawling) or even light (in scouting. Leaving one role long range support which not many are willing to play because even then there is a better option (dual gauss jager anyone?)..

Wanna hear a joke?
In Germany, if you want to make fun of asian accents, you normally take an "L" for every "R" so "every" whould be "evely" - this is because asians struggle with the "correct" pronunciation of the R (but have no problems with L and infact tend to spell it as L). This is not exclusive to asians btw, there's another big group of english speakers who can't vocalize a clean, rolling R (like in "ARRRRrrrrr! I'm a PiRRRRrrrrate!).

Yeah I never could do that.
Never really though about it until now.
Wow amazing you came on to read about mech warriors and instead was taken down a path of self discovery.
Amazeballs.

unlike the lighter mechs that have to keep moving, aim for components, dodge, toros twist, control heat, have map awareness, make crucial decisions like flanking or attacking front line, draw fire.... list goes on.
good pilots will easily deal 300+ damage any game in any mech. bad pilots only get that kind of damage because of my first statement.

Just because somebody doesn't p.iss on their keyboard and have a seizure when trying to shoot, doesn't mean they're bad. I mean, you don't have to break 300 damage to do good in a match. I can get 2-3 kills on fresh 'Mechs and not break 300 damage, because you know, accuracy is pretty awesome.

Once some folks discovered that they can't put down a jaegermech or cataphract firepower the 'newness' of shadowhawks have seemed to run out. I like the shadowhawk more than I thought and think it is an excellent light hunter and mobility mech.
Not enough dakka evidently....

You can tell it's not a 'competitive' 12man because of the Awesome. Plenty of Awesomes that do at times rock in PUGs. I see 5 or 6 a night. Some good, some.... not.

I have a Shadowhawk with a AC20 that I call the 'cleanup man'. I don't start a fight, I finish it. I have never broken past 400 damage, but I've had up to 5 kills.

Plenty of things happen that cause issues, with this mentality though any mech you are working on is a hindrance to your team. So we cannot play with builds, elite mechs without using GXP, or do anything else non-optimal (Running a light hunter in a match with no lights for instance) without hurting our team...? That is rather limiting...

Also, anyone who thinks running an assault is easy mode clearly has their head up their behinds. Running a light is so ridiculously easy it isn't even a comparison. You can make mistakes in a light (like running into the entire enemy team) that no assault anywhere could do and survive. Assaults you need to be thinking 5 steps ahead at all times and one mistake = you ganged and dead. Lights? You can make tactical mistake after tactical mistake and just run bob and weave away, bouncing off cliff walls and buildings at 100+kph with no damage, all the while deluding yourself that speed = skill.

How often do you play lights? Because unless the enemy team ignored you you die running into the blob. Same with mistakes, mistakes are livable in a light if and only if the enemy does not (or cannot) take advantage of them.
I own at least 2 mechs of each class (2 lights, 2 mediums, 3 heavies, 2 assaults). And even if I find myself in the 'wrong spot' I will certainly manage to extract myself if the enemy doens't jump on the chance to take me out regardless of which type of mech I play. I've had fights in Thuds and BMs were I'll sacrifice an arm to escape a bad flank or whatever. The same is true in a lighter mech, but its far easier to die to a couple good hits.
