It is dishonourable not to milk the afk for all it is worth... Take the leg out.. Take the side torso, a CT.. etc, etc...

I farmed 800dmg on a single atlas :)

AKKer was the only remaining Mech. It did take a while to kill it because the only weapon I had left was Streaks. (However, for the sake of the CBills etc surely waiting the extra minute to kill it was reasonable?)

It depends. It could be faster finishing the match and starting a new one sooner. The best case senario is if you can shoot the mech while capping.

I decided to keep killing the Atlas, on the basis that if it did come back to life it would kill us both easily, I couldn't see what was ''dishonorable'' about killing an empty Mech, and I generally couldn't see why we should leave those CBills behind.

The only person that did something wrong here was the spider pilot by intentionally TAing you.

AFK mechs spring to life when shot at surprisingly often. Or when you start to cap the base that they`re standing 50 feet away from.

The spider was just pissed off that he wouldn`t get his 50xp for capping but didn`t have the manhood to admit that publically, so he invented rules and tried to deter you.

If you want to get radical about it, that`s griefing, and a bannable offense. :)

I strive to kill 'em *all*. Crippled, AFK or DC makes no matter to me.

I once saw a game won by an AFK Atlas returning to "life" at a key moment - he torn apart the 2 badly beaten enemy mechs that were capping at the time. I don't think it was an intentional strategy since sitting on the base all match in an assault mech is incredibly boring and a great way to lose, but in this case, it worked since he was just assumed "dead."

So, no, you kill AFK enemies. You have no idea when they might "wake up" and there's no point in risking it. Nothing dishonorable about it.

As for wasting time doing it, yeah, please don't be "that guy" who spends a minute shooting up an AFK Atlas while ignoring the nearby enemy mechs that are killing him. Once lost a match because a pair of dim-bulbs stood around shooting a DEAD mech for over a minute. Okay, the game had bugged out and the dead mech was still showing up on radar, was targetable, etc. But they both stood there about 100m away, just shooting the smoldering, broken, unmoving remains while the rest of the team died.... durrr...

You didn't do anything wrong by killing the AFKer. But do take note: when you're killing an AFK mech, always go for the headshot - it's worth a lot more salvage c-bills for your entire team if you leave its other components intact.

You guys just reminded me of an incident when I was an AFK Atlas who came back to life close to the end of the match.

It was totally an accident. I'd hit ''launch'' and then got distracted by my son asking me to help him fetch something from a cupboard. I didn't realise I was ''in the game'' until I got back to my PC and saw my vacant Atlas still sitting at the base, with weapon fire going off in the distance.

So I apologised to my team and waddled off into battle. But by the time I got there everyone on my team was dead, and there were about 4 enemy Mechs still standing. Of course, in my undamaged Atlas, and with a modicum of luck and decent piloting, I was able to kill them and win the game for my team.

It was a bad/dishonorable way to win a match, and I'm glad to have never made that mistake twice!

First off let me say I have no problem with you (or anyone) killing an AFK player in the situation you described. I phrase it like that, because on more than one occasion, I've had teammates wasting shots at a known disco'd player while a serious fight was still going on. I have been known to comment on those occasions.....

As far as the spider goes, I think his actions were very foolish, and had I been in your shoes, he would have achieved his goal of having me stop shooting the AFK player, as I would then have switched to the more dangerous target - him.

AFK Mech is more than fair game I hope you took the Arms off it first then the L & R Torso, then a leg before killing it - max those c-bills!!

i do one of two things if his dc, one is milk it for damage and cbills or the second is leave it alone to cap/fight the alive ones.

if his afk... i always kill it, incase it revives.

you are fair game if you clicked launch.

I just played a rather epic game which concluded with me and a Spider on our team, vs one remaining unknown player on the enemy team.

When we got to the enemy base, we found an AFK Atlas, which I proceeded to destroy ... as one usually does with enemy Atlases, particularly when there's a chance they will suddenly come to life and kill you.

The Spider pilot protested. He said it was ''dishonorable'' to kill an AFK pilot. He said I should just help him cap instead, and leave the Atlas as is. He even friendly-fired me for a moment when I kept killing the Atlas.

However, I do believe in honor, and I do try to uphold the spirit of MechWarrior, even in these mercenary CBill-driven times.

So, for next time... Should I leave AFK Mechs alone, and cap out the match instead? What is your view?

PS: I scored 168 and 1303 damage in that match, in a lowly Shadowhawk. I'm not sure how much of that was ''illegitimate/free'' damage to the AFK Atlas, vs the other 4 enemies that I killed in active combat.

War is War, I would've jumped into his cockpit and steal everything I find!

My general rule of Thumb on this situations it's stand in front, blow his cockpit...

Quick clean death, extra salvage if i win, very little time to do that on any mech (30 points of dmg should be enough) and not much of stat padding.

Nothing wrong with killing someone who is AFK or DCed on the other team. It may not be very sporting, but that is all there is to it.

I had a situation playing Conquest in which I was piloting a Jenner. I was standing in Gamma capping as a light should in order to help my team. While capping, I was firing my weapons at a DC'ed mech about 150 meters away. Another member of my team appeared on the scene and proceeded to fire upon the DC. That's fair. what was NOT fair was that he purposely placed himself in a position between me and the DC (and not capping in the process) so as to steal the kill. There is displayed a real lack of honor.

And if he does power down, you don't kill him?

Intriguing!

had it in one game, it was just my lance and i left and a blackjack squirreling around. we stripped him, he stopped, powered down, and over the coms "he's powered down!"
"HE SHUT DOWN! HOLD FIRE!"
"HOLD!!"
"he's powered down"
"DID HE ACTUALLY DO THAT?!"
"Awesome. "
"Let's go cap, i'll stand gaurd."

And so he remained shut down until we won by cap. I still like to think there's honor and respect left in ceasing fire upon shut down.

If I recall correctly - the salvage bonus makes headshots worth more - but milking is worth more for XP

Found the problem in the bold text above. Next time, just stand in the damn box so that you can be helpfull and you can still shoot the Atlas with your Weapons (Either that or you should equip weapons with more range than Small Pulse Lasers on your Shadowhawk :) ). If that player is still being stupid about not killing an AFK mech... then its his problem... but then no one can complain that you werent helping to complete the second objective at the same time.
