What's the best weapon-config for him?
Right now I have 3x ML + AC/20 for short-range, and LRM10+A4 for long-range. I will replace the LRM10+A4 with a LRM20+A4 once I can afford the XL-reactor.
What's really going on my nerves is that I barely hit with the AC/20 because the torso-twist is too slow. And I can't replace the MLs with something with more punch because I can't afford the heat.
I built my Protector this way because I wanted a brawler. Is there a better config for a brawler-Protector or is it simply meant to be a Gauss+PPC+LRM-sniper?

I think it's the direct fire support variant of the Orions. The E slot in torso is quite high and allows you good convergence with the ballistics hardpoint. You can peek over the ridges without exposing your body unlike the other variants. If try turn it into a ML+SRM brawler it will be less effective compared to the similiar V variant.
I would wait for the announced hitbox correction mid-November before attempting to brawl with it. At the moment it's a bit too fragile(CT happy) for brawls.

The twist speed depends on the engine you use. With a big XL, the Orion has one of the fastest torsos in the game. However, its legs are always slow to turn, so it will not be a brawler. Consider a more mid-range setup based on an AC10 (like AC10+2xLL+PPC). The high DPS can be quite deadly if you remember to not hug targets.

Try 2xER LL and 2xLRM15s or if you want more brawling, go 2xLL, 1xLRM15, 1xSRM6.

I go with 3 MLs, 1 AC 20, and 2 ASRM6s

Protector is no brawler, roger that.
I think I'll try 3xLL + XAC/10. Plus maybe a LRM5 for indirect fire.

The build I've come to love is:
STD320
2 LLs
AC/20
It's reasonably quick, and covers point blank range out to about 500m pretty well.
