The PRIMARY objective of Assault is to assault the enemy base to capture resources. The PRIMARY objective of Conquest is to assault the various bases to capture resources. The SECONDARY objective for both is to destroy all enemy 'Mechs.
If you think otherwise, you are mistaken.
Team Death Match is coming, as is plain old Death Match, a.k.a. Free For All. But they are not here yet.
Besides, according to some data I saw posted in another thread, over 80% of matches are won via killing all members of the enemy team. Less than 20% were won by capping. So it's the minority, even when the primary objective is capping.

The "flag" is your base. The base capture mechanic takes the place of the "run back" of the flag, the latter of which would actually be faster. Just because a small group of players treat Assault as a Team Deathmatch doesn't make Assault into a Team Deathmatch.

Prove your statement, that only a small group of players treat assault as team deathmatch. IMO a majority of players play it like team deathmatch. Maybe the 80% shows the way it should go: More fighting less caping.
I'm not totally against caping but it makes the game a lot more boring for me, if it happens right after the start. It is like a race. Whoever reaches the other base first wins. This kind of race should end.
@Mystere: My and your religious believes are not the topic of this thread. You should try to rethink your posting and you will see, that it do not reflect any of my or the others statements. Feel free to add topic related content to your post any time.

Proof that it is a minority? Just look at the polls on the subject. Every poll that comes up about removing base captures as a victory condition in Assault or otherwise place limits on capturing the base have all been overwhelmingly opposed.

I disagree ,there are no Primary or secondary objectives in Assault.only two separate and equally valid ways of wining. The only reason 'Capture enemy base' is listed before 'Destroy all enemy mechs' is because A comes before D .

when i DO play early am EST, which is i guess late europe night it is much more common and SO annoying.. its just lame.
it ruins too many matches.
Its not as if US est prime time doesnt cap in my elo, but its done in a way that encourages attack defend etc.. Its not this pansy avoidence mwo.

They will add skirmish and team deathmatch for the not so much in thinking while playing players of the thinking mans shooter.
