Say whaaaa? :P

What really blows is when you hit that rock in the middle of the road that stops your assault mech.

Just those little blips.

Condemns you to the same spot for a good 8-10 seconds as you try and decel to figure out what you are stuck on.

The PB tombstone reads as follows:

The Pretty Baby, RIP.

Condemned to failure while tripping over the pebbles of doom. Not even ghost heat could cripple it!

Back when SRMs were mean, I could do okay in the PB and didn't mind dropping in it. I loved the speed and torso twist. Hate (and I do mean HATE) the decel and accel characteristics, and the freakin hard points. Not only are they totally Frankenstein, but there are also too few of them so you can't even pack any kind of serious firepower. The Pretty Baby is just an epic fail overall. PGI should have to pay some penance for this debacle.

Yeah there was a pretty mean 400XL, 18 DHS, 3 med pulse + 3 SRM6.

But now that we have 12 mans and SRM'***** detection issues it is a walking tombstone.

I laughed so hard at the first bit! I thought it would be really fun to have a fast awesome, because I love my Dragon Slayer with the 400XL. The PB though suffers from bad hardpoints, but the worst is the negative 10% decceleration! I didnt think I would notice but it is horrible, its akin to a hovercraft in handling. I had to use GXP to get it elited so I could atleast get back the double hardbrake perk. Once the awesome hitboxes get a pass Ill bring it back out for another try. All in all get a Dragon slayer instead.

I like Awesomes so I bought a PB when it was released. It is truly, truly horrible and has no redeeming features.

DO NOT BUY ONE, IT IS A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY.

I've had fun playing the PB. It's not a competitive mech by any stretch of the imagination, but if you enjoy the 9M and want something similar but with a hero bonus and capable of an even faster engine then the PB is a good choice.

My KDR overall is about 2.63 right now and my PB is 2.30 so it's slightly below average as far as performers go, but you don't run a PB because of the stats it gives you. You run it for the joy of an 89.1km/h barn door barreling down on people.

Some things to note before making your purchase:

The hardpoints present a challenge, play around in smurfy before you spend the money to make sure you come out with something you will like.

The decel nerf is frustrating and can take some of the fun away from playing the mech.

It only comes with an XL 340 engine and if you want to use it to do what only it can do (89.1km/h in an assault) then you have to shell out the cbills for an XL400 engine.

SRM's are vital to this mech (IMO) and right now they are pretty lousy as far as hit detection goes. I find myself dropping much less in my PB these days as a result.

TIPS:

The mech generally does well with XL engines and more often than not the CT goes before the side torso's. If you spread damage well then the arms can act as pretty decent damage shields before the CT goes.

Utilize the speed but don't be the first into the fight.

If you're not going to build it as a fast striker then I suggest there are a lot of other mechs that can provide fire support with better hardpoints and more favourable quirks.

Hopefully this information is helpful.

I think I'm running something like this:

TBH, the 9M is actually the most usable of the Awesomes... as bad and expensive as that sounds.

IMO, the only AWS that is semi viable now is the 8R, when run as an LRM boat. But you'll need a team to protect your arse and spot for you.

Tbh, the only way to run a Pretty Baby is with 2 UAC 5s or not at all.

I bought it during that last sale with the metal and the purple paints. Yuck. I knew the hardpoints would be a challenge, but I thought I could use some SRM and various lasers and make it work. It sort of did, but SRM hit detection went to {Scrap}, and streaks didnt cut it.

What I ended up doing was loading it full of LRM, though it isnt particularily built for it, it did pretty well. I then filled the rest with some ML and LL. It was quick enough(I used the xl375 from my 9M build) to get to a vantage point for LRM fire, and also to respond to the faster brawlers on my team so i could maneuver for focus fire. This method then lessened the drawback of decell as I usually ended up trying to slow behind some cover while fireing LRM off at a ally's target. Once LRM was out, or, if the brawl guys were getting beat down, I would advance into the fray with lasers. I put 95% of armor to the front. Despite it being "fragile" it is an 80 ton mech so 95% of the CT armor to the front can absorb a few hits easily, and the smaller mechs of the enemy in particular tend to think they can gun me down.

All in all it was a mediocre ride to master, and my K/D and W/L are sub par mostly due to a real struggle finding something that worked out ok in the begining when the SRM stuff failed. PB is just not a brawler, it cant maneuver well enough. It is, like all the awesomes, a mid-long range support fire mech that can take a fair beating compared to similar loadouts found in smaller mechs, or much cooler running if speed is sacrificed. Once I fell into the LRM/Laser loadout the results improved quite a bit.

What really gets me, is the 9M is a better PB, in every way. Putting a huge XL in an awesome makes for a really, really easy to aim assault mech with excellent speed to get to a fireing position and react to battle. Not a supreme brawler, but more then enough to take on anything lighter, and with correct terrain conditions some things heavier. But the PB movement quirks completely null this advantage on the chassis. So, even on sale, I regret the purchase. When hit box is altered, even if it makes the awesome formidable, the PB movement stuff will still make it a lame duck. I was rather pleased when I hit master 1/1, as it is the only mech in my bay that I have no interest in playing again. It is there simply for the completist in me.

Yes in all seriousness as mentioned above, nerfs to missiles kind of killed the only viable PB builds. I used to run mine as a fast striker with 3 srm 6s as the main "hello!" weapons, but they're just not good enough anymore. It's a fun Mech to pilot and will definitely improve the skill of anyone that perseveres... But why? Why bother when frankly just about every other assault is better and cheaper, and heavies like the dragon or mediums like the centurion fill the striker roll better anyway?
