I am a Highlander fan so HM.

Thanks.

The Dragon Slayer will probably hold up better. If you liked the 9K, then the DS is an "upgrade" over it.

Although, it begs the question why the 9K is crippled by design.

The DS loses a bit of convergence for better power (yes, 3 PPCs). That should cover most of the differences.

The Heavy Metal is kinda unique, except I like the 732 better (you can fit 3 PPCs in it, the HM cannot). If you like the Victor styled hardpoints over the Highlander's preference to have weapons on just the right side of the mech, then there's your option.

Thanks for the input. Do you find the additional speed in the DS to be a decisive factor, or are hardpoints the most decisive factor?

Would have loved to see the Misery in a Sale. These are not really interesting for me...well let's just hope that the Misery is going to be in the next Sale.

If I were to tell you that I've bought neither, then ;)

I've piloted a Highlander, and I have zero interest in the HM (hardpoints are not for me).

I haven't piloted a Victor yet, but I've noticed the most effective ones have pretty big engines in them (probably XLs to boot). However, there are VERY few mechs that benefit from the expanded engine options (Victor max is 385, DS is 400)... at most I have my own XL375 that I bought a while ago that probably get some use if I ever wanted it (it was originally for a Cent-D, then used it for the Awesome-9M run).

The DS was pretty popular at the height of the PPC meta, so that's the only reason why I still think it holds up now.

My best suggestion though is to buy the mech that best fits you. If you like Highlanders, then a HM isn't bad (but just remember how Victor hardpoints work - direct fire weapons on arms). If you like Victors but don't need the AC20, then the DS is exceptional (edit: although, it looks more like a Highlander).

Edit: Oh, to answer the question, the speed difference is negligible (when you compare it to the other Victors - 400XL is kinda overpriced as useless as the BH player that uses them)... it's the location and/or the potential of the hardpoints that determines how effective it will be (particularly for you).

Nice sale. Picked up a Heavy Metal and a Dragon Slayer. Also grabbed several months of premium time. Curious why they didn't just discount the 180-day and 360-day premium time packs as well. If you want 180-days, you have to buy the 30-day pack six times - twelve times for 360-days.

I won't say that the 400XL is a huge upgrade over the 380s I use for the 9M and Victors, but the 90kph assault is incredibly underrated. Just don't play it like an Atlas or a Stalker, and for god's sake protect those side torsi. Still, it's hard to beat rolling out in conquest with the mediums; the enemy's lights and mediums are in for a hell of a surprise when your assault mech shows up at the 90 second mark.

Any of the four a recommended buy ?

I've always wanted to get into the assaults, but want something more maneuverable for a smoother transition.

Should I get the DS or ease in with the mini assault- protector?

So very torn between the DS and HM. I already have a 9S, so I'm tempted to get the DS and then get maybe the 9B/9K to master and then sell it. But the other part of me is telling me that I want my first Highlander as well :(

Primary mission: Reconnaissance - Should you choose to accept it, grab the Kintaro KTO-GB, Protector ON1-P, Dragon Slayer VTR-DS or Heavy Metal HGN-HM (30% off the regular price) and proceed to drop coordinates. Don't forget that Hero Mechs provide a 30% boost!

So this is a Steiner Recon mission then?

I like my 90kph 80 ton DS. It is extremely difficult to use well. You are under-armed, and under-armoured for an Assault mech. But damn, it can be fun "dancing" with an Atlas like you were just a Spider again....

Might actually pick up the Orion...I have a Heavy Metal and I highly recommend it if you like nimble assaults. Strap on some fricken lay-zerrs and your favorite heavy ballistic while still sporting full armor and you're good (well, once you unlock Elite tier :( ).

I thought about the Dragon Slayer but nah.

Now where's the paint sale? I've still got a lot to unlock! :(

For you guys choosing between DS and HM I daresay Metal. Reasons:

1. It's the heaviest mech after Atlas!
2. It still has JJ!
3. It runs XL engines pretty well (try them on Atlas, Stalker, Awesome)!
3. It might be the best Highlander chassis possible because of energy slots in the arm (helpful against lights)!
4. Kill music!!!111

Imho the DS can be used as a mini-Lander, the HM.. not. The HM lacks the advantage of mounting energy weapons in the RT like the other landers, so jumpsniping is harder to do due to convergence issues because the arms are quite wide, like the non-DS Victors, that suffers from the same issue. The DS doesn't suffer from convergence, since you can house those two energies in the RT and use the whole left side to tank damage.

I indeed bought the DS yesterday and I'm enjoying it, much more than I do in my VTR-9S, that now will be kept only as a close range brawler.
The main drawback it's the inability to go dual UAC5 or to employ an AC20, but I don't like UAC5's reliability so I use dual AC5s and I am still able to use the GR so it doesn't matter if I can't get the AC 20.

The only thing I hope is that PGI isn't going to shift again the balance throwing useful builds out the window and making the DS useless as my Ilya is.

Excellent sale. I picked all 4 of them. I wasn't going to buy the Golden Boy, but, what the heck, I got it anyway, it isn't expensive. It's curious, I have 46 mechs, the last 6 are heroes, and the 12 previous come from the Phoenix Project.

I was waiting for the Misery, but these will do.

Why is it that every time I say "the only thing I might still be interested in is...", you guys put exactly that on sale within literally days?

Have you been probing my mind and parsing my dreams since the beginning of july? First Phoenix, then the cobra colors, then the snior citizens, the halloween, then the jester, now this.... I`m just starting to get back on my feet, please make the next sale something I don`t want like... uh oh, waitasec, no you don`t, I`m on to you now! ;)

But either way, thanks for the bargain on the Heavy Metal *raises beer stein*
