What makes me feel old by the way is I was in High School when FASA published BattleTech in 1984.

I THINK the first Simulation version wasn't until mid 90s, but I'm not sure on that.

Simulation version? Never heard of Virtual World Entertainment and the Battletech centers? In 1990 the first one opened at North Pier in Chicago.
1992. 32 players. 30 heat threshold. Joystick based aiming. All weapons converged on the joystick. Loadouts could not be changed. Each 'cockpit' was assigned a specific mech and loadout.

Always want to remember the 2 Xbad ones as a trilogy for some reason...
I never owned them (only games on the Xbox I wanted, and thats a lousy reason to spend $300+ on a console) but a friend did.
Do own a copy of phantom war though - that game is bad, on sooo many levels.

Sorry for making you guys feel old ;P I geuss he said the game he played was called battle tech and was basicly the same thing actually it was the same thing. With minor differences like how missiles used to launch one at a time, not a barrage.

It's one of the 1989 to 1992, or Mechwarrior / Mechwarrior 2.

While we're waiting on the patch...
Heres a neat Youtube video of all the Mech timeline...

If you dont wanna click the link, just search for "Evolution of Mechwarrior"
And it includes the sweet soundtracks !
Picture Pops running to the store to grab it for his Commodore 64
Things have changed a bit.

New player advice.
1. Spend MC on mechbays or Hero mechs. Hero mechs = +30% cbill bonus. It never expires.
2. Don't buy Champion mechs. the xp bonus isn't worth it.
3. Don't sell hero mechs. That's flushing money down the toilet.
4. Strip mechs before you sell them.
5. Don't sell engines. They are expensive. some cost more than entire mechs.
6. If you want to sell engines and weapons just be careful or it might cost you in the long rung.
7. Use http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ to configure mechs
8. Use http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ to configure mechs
9. Has http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ to configure been mentioned? It's free and it saves you from making a 5mill cbill mistake while building your mech,
10. Have fun, join a team speak server.
11. Don't take things personal in game.
12. Go into the training grounds and play around. Its not the best play ground around but you can use it to learn your way around maps and get a feel for how your mech moves.
13. When in doubt be behind someone else. Makes you less of a target.
14. The letter R. R is for targeting. You can see the armor and weapon status of a targeted mech.
15. Past that have fun and welcome to MechWarrior Online!
