Just found this article on sarna:

http://www.sarna.net...ry_Laser_Cannon

never heard of it, just found it because a marauder variant had one. So what's up with this, seems to be a funny and heavy E-Gun. ok a bit hot but nothing PGI couldn't tweak.

Maybe an alternative on the heavy end of energy weapons?

The Blazer Cannon/Binary Laser at this point in the timeline (3050) is still considered an Experimental piece of equipment. It does not leave that classification until 3077.

From a conceptual point of view, it's basically a double large laser, but loses a lot of power efficiency. It is slightly lighter than twin larges (9 vs. 10 tons), same number of crits, same range, same heat as twin large lasers, but only 75% of the damage as a pair of larges. The advantage in TT was that it dealt all of its damage to a single hit location, make it one of only a handful of "head chopper" weapons.

In MWO, the only real usefulness it might add (as its only major TT advantage is negated by double armor values and excellent weapon convergence in MWO) is letting you stuff more tonnage and damage into a single energy hard point. Although heavier, bulkier, and shorter of range than a PPC/ERPPC, it also would deal more damage, generate less comparable heat versus an ERPPC, and have no minimum range (unlike a standard PPC).

I don't think it would be a bad option to have, but I doubt it would see much use.

The Blazer deals +50% damage and +100% of the Standard Large Laser:
The usage depends how it is solved:
regarding the stats in MWO its 13.5dmg and 14 heat.
if beam duration of the standard laser is increased by 50% the additional damage is solved. Although the usage would be hard. Or you decrease the beam duration to 0.66 secs with 13-14dmg not the worst weapon.

However: if you have 2 energy hardpoints in the same location/torso or arms - > two large lasers will always be the better choice anyhow.

There are plenty of mechs that could benefit from a "2 large lasers in one hardpoint at 9 tons and 4 crits" type of weapon.
  • Not really for any lights as I know the 2LL jenner build well and it barely fits and is crazy.
  • The 4 ballistic 1 energy 3C cicada would LOVE this weapon.
  • Laser boating blackjacks and hunchys, 1 binary with a bunch of medium lasers could work.
  • Cent AL, trebs, kintaro and shadowhawk arm hardpoints could work.
  • Dragon 1-N has 2 energy hardpoints 1 in the arm 1 in the st, I could see a blazer work in the arm.
  • Catapult k2/jester with a blaser in one of the high mounted arm hardpoints could work
  • Firebrand in the arms
  • Arms of the 8v, 9m and pretty baby Awesome have only one energy hardpoint in an arm.
  • Dragon slayer 1 hardpoint in the arm.
  • Atlas D,D-DC,K 1 hardpoint in an arm
So yes I could see this weapon being used as plenty of mechs have decent solo energy hardpoints in the arms.
Also if you have the space/heat capacity in the bigger mechs why not cram 2 LL into one hardpoint and then have an extra medium laser/tag.

It shouldnt be that hard to just copy the large laser and alter the beam duration, damage, crits and weight in the code, seems quite straightforward actually.

Would love them.

PGI would have to rewrite the firing mechanic on Pulse lasers and the stats dramatically changed on Blazers to not make them horribad tho.

I would like to try this. I think for MWO it would make more sense if the damage was increased to 15 though since as stated in earlier posts its TT advantages are lost in MWO (other than being 1 ton lighter).

I'll pass.

But I admit, I am extremely biased. I know they were retconned into earlier existence by CGL or one of the later companies, but as someone who actually played the game back then, they quite simply did NOT exist. I really get tired of all this fill in the blanks afterward, as it takes away from the lore that came before.

On top of that.... having a laser do 12 damage, when I can have lasers doing 16 damage for 1 ton more, or a PPC/ER PPC, doing only slightly less damage, still for less heat, but with 2 free tons, seems... pointless?

Only way to make them useful would be to keep the 2 weapons ghost heat LG lasers and PPCs have. Otherwise it's 9 tons for 1.5 times the damage of a large laser and the heat of two. Doubt I'd take it over a PPC.

They're interesting, but not really that useful due to the way aiming works in TT vrs MWO.

Come on guys.

The whole point of the blazer was that you can focus the damage in one spot, which... is not an advantage in MW:O, because .... well..

Correction: They WOULD, until PGI gets the BRILLIANT idea to make 1 blazer count as 2 large lasers for the purpose of ghost heat- or worse, puts a cap of 1 firing at any given time before a blazer-specific OMGWTF HORRIFIC ghost heat penalty PWNS the firer.

Hmm, who knows maybe it would get it's own group... heat and damage could be tweaked to make it viable doesn't has to stay on TT values. And more weapons are always good, especially on the heavy end of energy. biggest damage dealer is PPC and LPL and that's max an AC10 in comparison. So you'd get a "bigger" weapon which comes near gauss/AC20.

And it could be a nice visual with a big yellow double beam or something like that :(

Sure I love new mechs/maps but at this point we just need ANYTHING new that is not a mech/map.

New weapons would be great, sure balancing could be a pain but things like blazers and magshots and such could just copy other weapons visual and sound mechanics while altering the speed/range/duration/crit/damage of the weapon.

in the next few months we will get a LOT of new weapons. In the form of the Clans.

Binary Laser Cannon !!! Might want to tone down the gfx slighty . . . but only slightly.

Some ideas I had a few months back for this weapon:
  • Constant beam - Press trigger to fire, release/mech shutdown to stop (like a flamer). As it is an experimental weapon niceties like built in cool downs have not been added. Good for people with fire discipline not so great for those without :)
  • Front loaded heat - Worse heat VS 2 Large Lasers for the first few seconds of fire, eventualy getting better than 2 large lasers the longer the fire is sustained.
  • Reverse PPC minimum range - The BLR does 1.5 Large Laser damage from 450 -150m. Damage increases steadily to the same as 2 Large Lasers from 150 - 0.
  • Ghost heat after 1 BLR.
  • Henceforth it's nickname shall be the "Binar Cannon" as Blazer is silly. It sounds like I'm going to fire my coat at the enemy :)
  • Innersphere only. Clanners need not apply!

Clans basically have their own version in the Heavy Large Laser.

This is exactly what I would like to see happen to pulse lasers. They are too similar to standard lasers to warrant the extra tonnage, more heat, crippled range and slightly higher damage. If memory serves, MW3 pulse lasers were like this? If I am also thinking of the right game, they were a little out of hand in Mech2.

I would love to roll into a brawl with 1 or 2 pulse lasers supported by a gratuitous number of heat sinks and some kind of autocannon setup and start hosing people down with lasers like these.

Its been a long time, but in my single player memories of MechWarrior games, Pulse Lasers were something you did not boat. But with a healthy amount of heat sinks you had a DPS monster on your hands with just a handful of them.
