I had to change my XL engine build in my Orion to now use a standard engine, now that they can be taken out so much easier from side torso hits.

I actually found a build that has both endo steel and ferro-fibrous armor, if you can believe it.

What are your protector builds?

Here is mine. Protector with a standard engine, zero space left over

Having to drop to a 275 Standard engine was a bit of a dissapointment, but with speed tweak I am back to doing normal speed for a heavy mech, 65kph.

Come again? People wanted the Orion to be more survivable, and I approve of this. Now you don't have to feel like running an AC-20 Orion is somehow gimpy because you needed an standard engine.

I can now torso twist and soak up a lot more damage, losing a side torso and arm in the process, but keep on fighting.

Even with XL engines you can torso twist and live longer.

No, I don't get that having bigger sides, and smaller CT is a bad thing. Dragon and Catapult pilots are weird like that, and I don't agree with it.

The thing about the Protector build I was running compared to this build is the slightly lower speed (lost about 7 kph) and I lost my AMS system, 1 ton of LRM ammo, and 1 heat sink. That was it. I added ferro-fibrous armor, however, and that helped keep the weapon load the same.

Orion got about x3 times more durability and lost almost none of it's ability to run an XL

You know how you survive in an Orion with an XL now?

You torso twist!

You know how you survived in an Orion with an XL prepatch?

You didn't, you got nailed in the CT no matter how you twisted.

I never found the Orion to be as much of a death-trap as some people tried to make out, but the CT did take the bulk of the damage. Since the patch, I've noticed the entire torso spreads the damage much more evenly.

Pre-patch, my best build was always LPLas and AC/10 for the shoot-and-twist. LLas always felt like suicide for the time spent tracking the target. Now, I'm running LLas and 2 AC/5 very effectively.
