Most of the weight problem is that the game is too focussed on blowing up the enemy. that's why the cheesebuilds are the most popular and is in online multiplayer almost impossible to avoid. the challenge to make other mechs more popular is to find other game modes that reward other behaviour and make them interesting.
i like lights myself but it is frustrating to scout and report enemy positions as it stands. also the moaning when you execute a successful cap is just overwhelming... it is not cheating to win on cap. it is what makes other mech types useful.
objective style game modes are going to be key here.
I have to agree with you there.... Although I despise base caps, it is an effective way for lights to be useful. My problem is with players that use the excuse of it not being fare because one team has more tonnage then the other. I have seen brilliant pilots kick the other teams round arse square by their ability to pilot their mechs. I for one have been on the losing side of this thinking to myself. "Man I wish they were on my team" ~grins.
Tonnage isn't the issue, its sheer ferocity. I consider myself to be a good pilot, but there are those who have snapped me back so hard, I thought I was a third string cadet. =]
Your right. There needs to be more rewards for piloting maneuvers. Instead of gearing the game for the more damage you do, the greater the rewards. In the table top. You were given a certain amount of C-bills per contract. Those were divided up equally amongst the players. Perhaps if each player got the same amount for a successful campaign rather than the current reward system you might have happier players. Then everyone could play what they wanted, when they wanted to. However, you would still have it based on victory conditions, and I could see that being a whole new problem in itself.
Personally, there is no such thing as a "cheese build" in my opinion. That is the very essence of this game. Buy a giant robot, and then customize it to suit your playing style. Just because you have multiple weapons of the same type, isn't going to guarantee that you successfully utilize it.
