Artillery Strike Is Bunker Buster?

It’s not completely clear from the picture, but there was a locust running around dropping markers for arty strikes not long into the match, and to avoid his first drop I moved under the wing of the dropship in the upper base. The Locust then dropped a marker right next to me under the wing, but I thought “Hey, the rounds will be coming in from above, so I’ll be safe under cover.”
Except the rounds just sailed visibly right through the dropship wing, resulting in all the damage you see on my armour doll.
I’m pretty happy with the various remote strikes, I think they promote interesting play, but I still want them to follow common sense rules. Is it possible use an air/arty strike in the caves on Frozen City or Forrest Colony?

The marker doesn't appear to be under the dropship, could that be the reason?

My current theory is that the strike did hit and explode on the top of the wing, but the explosion splash radius isn't stopped by cover and magically transferred through the wing to my mech. The marker was definitely dropped under the wing.
I'm not aware of any other spots with similar close overhead cover, except maybe the overhead pipes area of the sewage base in Caustic, but I haven't tested that yet. Potentially also the helipad on River City, I only tested that the explosion struck the upper surface, not that damage passed through.

That's the strike hitting the 'roof' above, but showing through.
PS. Why was this moved to Metagame? It's clearly a balance issue to do with the behaviour and function of the module in game, and the balance forum was the appropriate place to discuss it.

its irritating and not very good but hasn't been fixed since closed beta, so don't hold your breath..but hell if cry engine can't tell the difference between 15 foot thick tunnels and open sky then it was a fail engine to use..

I considered that, but I was tucked in as deeply as possible under the wing and the damage I received was completely even on all components, so I think it's more likely that it was splash from above, through the wing.

I think you're right, it's just a 'feature' of the engine that the rendered geometry isn't the same as the physics geometry accounted for by the various npc systems. I guess it's also why you can't shoot someone standing just to one side of a rock!

UAV needs line of sight right? So it should still detect what is visible through the holes unless it's out of range.

I have had LRMs drop on me while under the platform in the river. Cover working as intended!

Indeed. One might wonder what the wing is composed of. An airplane wing is pretty much a hollow cone and last I heard did not even stop medium caliber bullets. Perhaps that are passing through the wing and detonating on impact with the ground, as if they were actually dropped/falling from altitude.

Try Crimson Straits. it has a tunnel, a large landing platform, and other platforms and elevated pipes and roads. You can also test the crashed dropships on frozen city and tourmaline desert.
The drop ship might not be part of the terrain the same way a hill, boulder or building is. it could be a static model that has similar properties to a building. so maybe the arty strike coding works differently with it. Or you took less damage than you would have because some did hit the ship and you were protected. You might have been hit by strikes on the wing as you figured and by strikes that hit the ground around the wing.
The tunnel in frozen city is not a tunnel or a ravine. It is a fissure.

The odds are good it's splash. 1) They never fixed splash, so splash damage is amplified when spread across components, not split. 2) The splash radius on an Arty strike is 30m (60m diameter). That easily reaches through the dropship.
