While in game, I have to disagree with listening to music. I find it much more useful to be able to hear things like explosions and especially footfalls. Numerous times I have detected the enemy coming up behind me because of this. After all, this supposed to be life and death, right?

One of the weird things about me, is that I hear both:
There is no such thing as background noise, and, more often than not, having the music playing (usually helps if the music is in sync to the mech's 'bounce') helps me notice those things more easily.
I actually have an easier time noticing those things with the music playing than with people talking (which is why I had nothing like TS on my computer before I started dropping with Koniving)

That make sense?

I totally agree - I'd find music to be distracting.

Don't get me wrong, back in my Commodore 64 flight sim days I'd have some epic score blaring as I was flying along. It was fun, and also funny to see exactly how much damage I'd taken in the process. One time I didn't realize that one of my engines (on an AH-64) was completely gone until the music had stopped.

But I also think on something like playing paintball - I'd never bring along a ipod and blast heavy metal as I'm jumping between bunkers and spraying paint. Situational awareness is a very key part, and with music playing I can't hear what the other team is doing, and I also can't hear what my team is trying to communicate to me. It's like playing with blinders on.

I can agree with this, but at the same time with the right kind of music playing I find it easier to get into something I'm doing. For example with my winamp playing and something triumphant is playing I'll boldly rush and get a few kills and as soon as the song changes to something more reserved I'll completely lose my drive to push on and get stalemated into a corner until someone else does something.

Big difference (for me) with real-world situational awareness and the same thing.. in a video game

Sadly anyone would qualify as talking to much. :)
(Actually had a hard time playing the other day, cause I had someone who's accent was especially distracting... and I am not sure why- probably because I had to pay that much more attention to know what he was saying -_-)

I find PUG matches are greatly improved with "Yakety Sax"

Add your own music, the best is electronic/futuristic stuff from the 80s'/early 90s'. Starfox music goes particularly well with it.

I began using these in some vids under the stipulation that I provide links to which NGNG album(s) the music is coming from.

The most recent.

Other good soundtracks to use: Mechwarrior 2 and MW2: Mercs.
Spoiler

Front Mission (any) soundtrack.
Spoiler

Homeworld soundtracks can add some spice, but it's really got to be the right track and the right time.

What game soundtracks would anyone else recommend? Always got my ears open for good ones.

Most of the old Command & Conquer tracks are great to get the mech pumping too.
I often have the album on loop while playing.
Spoiler

Any of the song by Jam Project are good if you are a super robot fan.

EA restricts all of its music. It'd force ads on my vids that I can't get revenue from. ;) Otherwise Battlefield music would also get slipped in.

But there's no denying the classics of 1995 such as Total Annihilation

Or the 1985 classic Herzog Zwei.

Total Annihilation's unofficial successor Supreme Commander just got added to my list (made as a prequel, but failed to get the rights and such factions were renamed and "Total Annihilation" was stripped from Supreme Commander's title).

TA's true successor, Planetary Annihilation, has an alpha soundtrack. While not as "TA" as I'd like, it has some interesting sounds.

Key thing for me to be able to use audio, though, is its copyright has to have run out. >.>

It's a different kind of immersion - almost movie-esque. There was an old 80s movie (Iron Eagle I think) where part of the final climatic scene involved the main character flying a fighter jet, slapping a tape into a walkman, and winning the against-all-odds victory.

Oh the eighties.... The scars will never heal completely...
