I've done some tweaks in my attempt to improve my ability to see and recognize battlemechs, and I thought I'd ask for input here.

How does one optimize one visual settings in MWO?

Is there a general answer or should settings change for different maps?
  • For example: Frozen City, I push Gamma up and Brightness a bit down.
  • Another example: Terra Therma, I push Brightness up.
  • Another example: Forest Colony, what should I do?
  • Another one: River City Night, I push Gamma down and Brightness up, the opposite of Frozen City.

Do you all run at very low settings to optimize detection of mechs?

Do you use AA?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't do any of that. I never have, in any game I've played.

I just use the correct vision mode. A well-timed used of thermal imaging can make a big difference, not just on night maps but also on frozen city (day) and forest colony.

I had a fun moment a little while ago on forest colony, went towards the pickle factory and I walked into enemy ECM. Couldn't see it's course but I flicked to thermal imaging and there was cicada right in front of me, due to his paint and the murky lighting he was very well camouflaged under normal vision despite being only a couple hundred meters away. Lit up like a Christmas tree in thermal vision and I blew him in half.

Low light vision is useful in parts of Caustic valley to glimpse through the smoke in the caldera.

Oddly enough sometimes normal vision is best on river city night, when looking at things beyond the range of thermal or low light vision modes.

I run with mostly medium settings, post processing and AA and motion blur turned off. Incidental vegetation doesn't bother me. when i watch some Twitch streams some maps do appear murkier than when I play, but i'm not using anything out of the ordinary to make mechs more visible, just the options available in the options menu.

I see I'm not the only person who knows how to "see" through the smoke on Caustic Valley and certain other maps.
