Disconnect With Multiple People On Same Router

I am unaware if this is patch specific, meaning a new issue with current patch, or if it is something that has existed for a while. Also, performed an extensive Google search without anything that came close to this issue.

The problem appears to be this:

There are currently 4 computers using my home network to play MWO. A mixture of wireless and hardwired connections. There are two groups of two. When a match is found, MWO hangs on a black screen and eventually a random number of us do not make it into the game. It is not a DC since the spot is still open, but is never filled. The player(s) who dont make it in are taken back to the home screen.

It is treated a like a DC for the purpose of the mech is not available for the next match because it is 'In Game', which is annoying since I only have one mech that is battle ready beyond trial mechs, and I do not like using those.

I guess the questions are as follows:

is there a limiting factor with connections from the same IP?

is this a local problem of packet dropping or something related to the local network? From testing, the packet drop is 0%, and the connections are of course mixed wifi and hardwired, but with the same router.

is this something with the game itself, meaning the patch or a previous bug?

Additional information
generally the ping is low for this connection, like around 40.
I have played MWO for several months now with only a couple DCs.

Any help is appreciated.

since I would presume that the game engine is capable of negotiating multiple connections behind a NAT, I would guess that this is a bug in the matchmaking when it tells you to connect to a server.

Then again, it might be a bug in cryengine 3 when multiple people connect from the same external ip at the same time

if someone has a wireless hotspot for a 4g LTE connection you could try moving the wireless machines to that

also your router might just stink as well. Unfortunately your use case is relatively uncommon and probably opens up a bunch of race conditions

Some people have reported this before that I've seen.

Check your router. Make sure uPnP is enabled on it, and it handles NAT properly. It honestly sounds more like a router issue than a game issue.

Others have had issues with disconnecting from matches -- if one computer behind a router disconnects (whether by choice or crash or whatever), all computers on that same router disconnect as well.

It might very well be an issue with multiple computers connecting from the same IP addy.

Update and to answer some above queries:

The router is an old reliable Linksys wrt54g, with I believe the last firmware version released. It will actually be replaced soon, but as far as NAT handling it is fine, and UPnP is enabled. The router has never led me wrong and so it has earned some trust that it isn't the issue until I can prove it otherwise.

I was unable to replicate packet dropping or faulty server communication stress testing the router this morning, and since this would qualify as the first problem I have ever had with it, I think the fault lies somewhere else.

I have also been installing a gigabit LAN, but since it was also wireless drops, I don't suspect the cabling or jacks of being faulty.

I thought about the wireless hotspot, but did not act and test with it.
We were all able to play as single players, which defeated the purpose, but allowed us to play.

I will be unable to look at further in the near future, as it was a gathering of friends to teach them how to play, and they have clearly taken their systems with them. I would imagine the next time this happens I will have a new router, but if it is the game or server it very well may persists.

Thanks for your posts.

EDIT: Side not, the mech that I am piloting when I get DCed stays in game forever! At least 30 minutes. Outrageous.

Yeah I don't think it's your router since you are able to play if you didn't launch at the same time

1. For testing purposes, disable the router firewall. This does not disable NAT. Over the years a number of games have had issues with a router/gateway software firewall. Can also be known as SPI or stateful packet inspection. MWO uses UDP packets and the router believes the port being used is under attack, closing off that port.

2. Reboot the router.

3. I didnt see if it was posted or not, but does it the issue occur if only one computer is running MWO?

Am currently testing the firewall being turned off. Would rather port forward than turn that off, but there seems to be no consonances on ports. I however feel that it will not make a difference since this router worked flawlessly before the patch, having dropped maybe 2 games out of 200 some. Currently I drop every third game, consistently.

Update: it remains every third game, in game. The consistency points to the game/server, not the local network. Possibly this memory leak issue as discussed earlier? Perhaps I should always restart after two games?

Side note, do I still get CBills after dcing in game? I had 2 kills and 3 assists prior to dcing and around 500 damage with multiple component kills. Would be a shame to not get that cash.

Since it has not been clearly stated, what happens when only one computer is logged on and playing? Two computers? The original post was concerned with 4 computers, other posts not clearly stated.

And have you tried VPN the game when running only one computer?

As for the router/gateway firewall, windows/3rd party software firewall on the computer are the primary firewalls.

I've had a similar issue, where two of us (on the same connection) were booted at the same time, however, Teamspeak was still working the whole time as well as other internet services.

@Tarl Cabot
When one computer is on the network, I get a disconnect roughly every third game. Generally this happens in the lobby but sometimes in game. There is no pop up or any indication of a failure, I am just returned to the home screen.

The primary firewalls are the router, and whatever default firewall Microsoft provides.

I have not tried to VPN to play the game.
