this should be a hot key to toggle on or off, not a push and hold key, or better yet, offer it both ways, how tough is that?

I'd certainly appreciate it. I use arm lock to track running light 'mechs, as it allows me to sweep from one side to the other and have my torso and arm mounted weapons hit the same place. The more stable reticule is also useful for the long range stuff.
Basically, I keep arm lock on unless I'm brawling (which is rare for me), and when a target is above or below my torso's elevation capacity. Your suggested feature for an on/off toggle instead of holding down the shift key would make the rare situations that I use unlocked arms in much less stressful.

go to the key mapping under options. you should be able to map a key to arm lock.

Thats not what he's asking for. Currently you have to hold down the key mapped to 'arm lock' the entire time, OP wants a toggle so you don't have to hold it down.

I did not realize that that was how it was set up.
