Is the blatcat (dual AC 20) still viable, and if it isn't what happened?
I haven't played much since early beta.

It is.
The AC40 Jager is just better.
Dual Gauss is arguably better for a Catapult.

It's just as fun as ever

Just be aware that if you fire both AC/20 in a 0.5 second period you'll incur a pretty big heat penalty.

I remember the massive heat spikes, and the fact that you could, contrary to popular belief at the time, overheat enough to detonate with one.

On another note: AC 40 jaeger is better in what way(s)? More alpha, sustained, faster platform to bring the one shotting of AS mechs on faster, what?

It is faster, because you can fit an XL engine while taking the AC20s. It is also better for shooting over ridges thanks to the high arms. The Catapult K2 does better when you rely more on energy weapons.

Catapult's huge CT makes it less than ideal for close range combat. AC20s mean you will be stuck with a sluggish STD engine, while Jagermechs with similiar weapon loadouts can use XL engines. Jagers will move 10-15 kph faster than you, have more ammo, more armor, and can shoot in difficult angles since the arm-mounted AC20s aren't restricted by torso tilt.
I took one for a spin yesterday, and while probably not the worst mech ever, it's clearly inferior to similiar Jagers in every way, except for looks.
I'd recommend switching to dual gauss, dual AC10, dual UAC5, or something that allows you to use an XL engine. Or get any Jager if you want to play the dual AC20.
