New Player Here, Had Two Questions

First, it appears there is no way for players to communicate unless they are in an actual mech, which is time for tactical info, not finding friends. That said - How do I find people to play with? I thought every game was more or less a 'PUG' until I found out you can friend people and launch as a team. Other than the seemingly unhelpful 'friend' button.. how do I find people, add them, and launch as a team?
Secondly: Crashing seems to be a problem for me. Last night was especially bad when I crashed 4 out of 5 games. When the game crashes the screen freezes, but the mouse still works. I have to CTR+ALT+DEL to the task manager, which says MW:O is still running (but it isn't) and end process.
I checked the min specs, my system is at the 'optimal' level, it's not super old. Are there standard troubleshooting procedures I should follow that have worked for others? I did a search in the forum and only found posts from May, so I am concerned the problem may be isolated to my machine?
Thank you for any help you can provide!

First you can recruit real life friends into the game to come play with you. That is the method PGI would probably prefer, but not always the easiest route. A lot of us long-time BT fans have a base of friends who are into the game enough to want to come play but complete newbies may find this harder.
Second, you can check out existing player groups here on these forums. Once you have completed your cadet matches, head over to: http://mwomercs.com/...corps-outreach/ There are several player-run groups there that are actively recruiting. There are groups anywhere from the most hard-core, competitive groups all the way down to some very casual outfits.
Another option would be to just jump onto a public teamspeak server and talk to and get to know people in real-time. Most of the major houses support public or semi-public servers that they welcome new players to. You should be able to find that info for each house here: http://mwomercs.com/...s-inner-sphere/
Finally, you could go with the most low tech option which is to write down names of players you see in-game that you enjoy playing with/against and then come to the website here and use the messaging feature to drop them a line or a friend request.
Best of luck to you.

Otherwise, chatting can be done though the forums to just BS about the game.
2) Alt-tabing out and back in can help. Try running the repair tool, updating your drivers, and stopping any background processes (particularly things like Steam). I find that AMD card owners tend to have more issues with this game.
Good luck and happy hunting. Hope that helped.

Bront, I'll check out that Steiner hub. I'm not a die hard faction guy, I just want to play with people I know better than 11 other mouth breathers I got thrown in with .
Regarding my crashing issue, where do I find this repair tool? Also, I've got an NVIDA 560Ti, I'll make sure all my drivers are up to date and my excess processes are killed off. Now that you mention it, I am running steam 24/7.
Thanks again, hope to see you both around

The repair tool.
http://mwomercs.com/...public-release/ The link there is updated with every patch that's given out.
As for random guys to hang with, depending on what time of day you play perhaps you may consider dropping together with the Zhizhu Merc Corp? We tend to play late EST evenings and often on weekend mornings. We're more of a merc group than a faction and we play casually for now though we do have some military leadership for more serious nights. We're fun loving and multi-national. If you're interested, throw a message my way on here and I'll share the teamspeak info. Our site.
Our biggest drop nights are usually Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. Wednesday usually gets the highest numbers out there and the occasional 12 man match.

It looks like you are in luck, and that you are out of the Cadet phase!
Head over to the sub-forum Outreach, or one of the IS/Clan forums and there are tons of recruiting threads for units right here on this website.
Also, download TeamSpeak and check out:
North American Comstar
IP Address: na1.mech-connect.net
Password: WordofBlake
No Guts No Galaxy also has a teamspeak server up. Click the icon in the corner of their website.
Both of these places have casual rooms as well as places setup for organized units!

This one is a bit rougher to narrow down. Have you updated your video drivers? Tried different video settings? If you tab back into the game from the task manager, does it ever recover (instead of shutting it down?)
Honestly support@mwomercs.com might be a better route to go for crashes.

update your video drivers, this is ultra important to game stability
as your using nvidia i would recommend you dont install nvidia experience but if its already on there thats ok make sure to keep that up to date too
after you have updated your drivers, navigate to your games install directory
if you dont know where it is right click on the MWO icon on your desktop and click "open file location"
navigate up one folder, find the "USER" folder and in there delete the "shaders" folder
this will get the game to rebuild the shaders based on your current video driver information
update any other drivers you can find for your system, sound drivers being the next most important
if you are still getting crashing after that and have run the game fix tool
it is likely something is interfering with it
so before your next play session
restart your pc, dont just close the lid or turn off the screen, turn it off leave it for 20 seconds and reboot
once back on do NOT open web browsers, close steam, terminate any antivirus, close off printer monitors... everything
close off everything
play game
if you do not crash then you know another program was causing it
repeat above proccess but this time only close off 1 program , then play
do this until you can figure out what program was causing the conflict
then remove program if you can, or kill it each time you play AND most importantly
let the support team know that the program is giving you grief with MWO

If the video freezes but the sound does not, alt-tab out and go back into the game, that usually fixes it. It's a known bug.

Download Teamspeak
Then in the TS client, bookmark:
Comstar: na1.mech-connect.net
PW: WordofBlake
NGNG: voip01.n1585.hypernia.net:9992
PW: mechwarrior
Lots of free agents who play together there. I also have to drop a plug in for our own group Cameron's Highlanders.

Regarding the COMMUNICATION issue, I feel the need to point out what many miss when they are truly new to MWO (regardless of if the are familiar with BT). DOUBLE CLICKING on anyone who you have friended and whose icon is green (available, not in game) should open a in game, in mechlab chat window with them where you can text chat. It can be a bit buggy, with mysteriously missing text or other issues, but this serves as an in game method of communication that we old timers take for granted, but that people new to MWO can actually completely overlook. The may realize that the flashing social button means they have a group invite, friend invite or the like, but never then realize there is a group text chat window that comes up if you click the group tab, or a individual text window that comes up if you double click a friends name or click a blinking name on the list (someone who sent YOU a message).
I know it seems extremely basic, but I cannot believe how many times I have introduced friends to the social tab because they were texting or IMing me in another app/on phone - oblivious to the in game window chat.
