I have figured out the whole IS verses Clan thing ... no really, their whole war.
It's about which way the legs go on the mech IS favour the "human" style of legs, oh sure they tried to appease the clan guys with a few animal style leg mechs like the Raven and the Catapult but their heart wasn't in it was it ! The clans on the other hand were set on the whole "your mech needs to look like an animal" thing and so a whole big bru ha ha ensued !
I suggest a third way ...
Lizard legs . . . coming out of the side of the body . . .
Problem solved, peace ensues and we can all go back to Solaris and listen to Duncan Fisher do his thing and get the beer in . . .

There are actually 4 types of legs (WHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAT?)
Bipedal
"Chicken"
Double-Kneed
Quad
The Ares (although has 3 legs) Is considered in the fourth category because its legs work similar enough to quad mechs.

It is an interesting observation. The Clan mechs do look sort of "animalistic". They are quite visually distinct for the most part. I think they look badass.
