Just wondering which game mode people prefer and why.......

Different mode for different mechs.... different moods, etc.....

I play both modes and have allways done so despite liking Conquest more (the original Conquest).
Atm Assaul and Conquest play almost similar - blob and destroy - with the numbers of bases differing.
The old Conqest with shorter cap-times was better as it forced Teams to split up from the start and gave a much more dynamic gameplay while Assault was allways about the "Blob".

Imo:
More Blob = Less Fun!

I almost always play assault.

The ironic thing is that recently, most assault matches have turned into cap rushes, and my few attempts to play conquest have turned into massive brawls.

I play Assault in PuG drops exclusively, by choice. Sometimes I'll drop with others who will do any/Conquest drops, but Conquest is just Assault with an extra side of Frustration. The core strategy in PuGs is the same as it is in Assault, but with distractions.

Conquest is fun for organized team play - with pugs, the most effective strategy has always been the same as Assault. Lights out to scout and cap, everyone else stay together and try to find a big group of the enemy to kill. The main difference is that Conquest seems to reward splitting up, so it's more likely to have small groups run off by themselves to get found and killed by the enemy main body. Certainly, you can end up with the team that lost the force-on-force fight win by capping, but normally that only happens when you have a bunch of SniparWarriors and the two forces don't decisively engage - most Conquest matches are still won by the side who simply murders the other team faster.

That being said, I do try Conquest every so often to see if things seem to have changed, but I do that quite infrequently, so the state of the game may have somehow changed. =)

Assault, almost exclusively when playing on my own. Usually because I play lights and running around the edge of the map gets boring round after round.

That said, Conquest is pretty fun. However, it's bothersome that there's never any tactics involved. It's either "Heavies rush Theta, then back off when a single enemy shows up" or "Follow the lights in a merry-go-round of capping, to get picked off when the enemy shows up since everyone is strung out".
Conquest is far, far better with at least a couple of people on comms.

The slower cap timer on Conquest really killed the fun of that mode for me. It used to play in a far more dynamic fashion, but now you spend so much time flipping one point, it's just TDM with a few capture points scattered around for decoration. The only positive aspect is that it makes a great tool for training new light pilots.

Assault mode is fine aside from the constant whining on the forums about cap rushers. If people could just wrap their heads around the concept of defense, they'd find that fight they keep looking mid map for....

Conquest easily, better fights all around. You generally see more competent players on Conquest compared to Assault.

Besides, no big blobs and no back capping. Fights are more dynamic, especially if you use a JJ mech and have the ability to move fast and reinforce groups under attack.

I prefer conquest. More to consider strategicly, requires more situational awareness, and more teamwork. I find you tend to get more varied skirmishes in Conquest.

Assault is OK as well, but often Conquest turns into assault without the single base cap option.

I almost exclusively play conquest. I like that it requires strategy and manuvering as opposed to merely devolving into the two deathballs.

As a result of multiple smaller engagements - conquests matches also tend to be closer. When there' only one big fight (the usual for assault) - one side or the other gets the edge and often steamrolls. In conquest you'll generally have 2-4 lesser engagements to start things off - usually either side wins at least one of them due to local superiority.

Conquest or Any.

It's more likely to get several smaller sized engagements on conquest, which is more fun.

I used to think conquest was the clear cut winner but, honestly it's a coin toss. There are many games in assault ended by caps without a shot fired and tons of games of conquest when you can't get anyone on your team to even cap. It's always fun watching teammates walk right past cap points and not even stop only to lose by caps.

UPDATE! Very recently, I've begun to drop "Any." The reason is that the advent of faster 'mech speeds has led to more diversity between the game types. Conquest tends to feature more small engagements, while Assault generally has a standoff phase followed by one decisive brawl. I enjoy both game types, so I let chance decide which mode I drop into - it helps me be tactically flexible.

Normally i prefer Conquest. Reasons have already been mentioned. I feel that in CQ the team with "better" Pilots doesnt always win. And also, lighter mechs play a more important role. so, everything feels more "fair" for both sides and all Mechtypes.
Assault is fun too, but issues with the matchmaker, weight difference etc tend to result in more 12:0/1/2 games (steamrolls), which is lame for both sides.
Mostly i choose "any".
