During the first summer of closed beta they were talking about releasing one mech a month and I thought "you know, I could deal with that if we have community warfare at launch". The part that made even sadder is that I realized that I'm essentially playing the same game I was that summer just with more maps/mechs.

I remember when the HUD would flake out during every other match and it was impossible to kill Raven-3L's.
The game has had some significant improvements since Closed Beta, even if production has been moving at a much slower rate than originally expected (or promised.)

Pepperidge Farm Remembers.
Snark aside, the game has made progress. It may not be as much as we (and/or PGI) wanted, but its better than nothing.

The game has no doubt improved since CB...and I totally still have faith that it will eventually be the game they set out to make.
I think they were just a little unrealistic with the scope of the project and how long it would take to actually implement what they envisioned. I think it was a bad idea to announce planned features before they had working prototypes of those features (or at least working proofs of concept). Chickens, hatching and counting them beforehand and all that stuff, so to speak.

The game has come a ways, but not a long way IMO. Most of the bugs like the HUD glitch and weird texture issues would have been patched out within a couple months after launch in a lot of games, it took almost a year for those things to be finally taken care of.
To me, I don't think this game will truly felt like it has gone somewhere till UI 2.0. Then it will feel like they have come a long way. Still, I don't know if I will really be content with the game till CW. Notice I use the term content and not happy. Happy will be good though, I can be happy if it meets or exceeds my expectations. Here is hoping.

Aside from ragers and QQers, I don't think anyone is disputing progress has been made. It's just not the progress most wanted. They prioritized the wrong progression. They know it and we know it. The reasons why are irrelevant for most at this point. Most don't care about the why.
Lobbies and ways to drop against opponents in a synchronized manner would have quelled most of this but they chose not to. They've also chosen to do things like "CW means a lot of things to a lot of people and has evolved (blah blah blah insert double talk and spin here)" when they knew dam well that the majority of players had a very definitive idea of what CW they wanted and what it was.
It was simply planetary control battles in the inner sphere along with ways to drop with units and fight against other factions in a cohesive manner. That's it. No "Well see community warfare begins with the insertion of this particular module so that counts towards progression of community warfare". It's really that simple.

How about that HPG manifold! That is some sick progress right there! That map makes me grin from ear to ear. Just shooting at nothing is fun on that map, not to mention the awesome sound changes (guass is iffy)

Imagine what a mix-up of the two would look like (CB's long gone features like HD textures, knockdowns,... + new things like mechs/maps/less bugs).

I'm not sure bug fixes count as progress. Progress is the stuff that introduces new bugs to be fixed.

i remember when the game had 1 mech and one map and half the weapons we have now and no mech upgrades or unlocks
the path behind us is long indeed and it gets cloudy to even recall where we started from
but distance traveled is so much more important that the desired destinations
CW and 2.0 would be out already if it were not for some rather large and unexpected issues that went unseen by the community at large (like the hud bugs that turned out to be far deeper and worse than anyone expected, effecting all sorts of unrelated systems)
but progress is progress, so in the end the destinations will be reached even it takes longer than we wanted
i believe it will be worth it

I was so mad when they put in the film grain.
