Sorry for a post that is all questions, but I has confused.

But it is likely players who have not chosen a faction to side with and decide to free drop will be filling the ranks of teams needing mechs in same way. Thats an obvious way of going and is almost a given.

Exactly.
PGI see all these questions from potential customers about basic game play functions? This is a big part of the backlash and why many wallets are closing.
I guess I could also give a snarky response about the 2 factions being PGI and the players

People get angry when PGI tells them what their plans are, and people get angry when PGI doesn't, so it doesn't make a difference. People just get angry because they want to.

people get angry because words were taken to heart and literally, every single time. well now the problem is those plans have come up too many times too long and people are thinking - how could they have been so sure about x this and y that and a year later still saying it's soon? that's the problem all security is out of the bag, how much time is it going to take? just how many years? are we looking at vaperware? that's why wallets are closing, things are looking rushed, dodgy and/or all in the imaginations of the devs.
it looks immature to reel and whine about it but there's so much evidence for the negative sircumstances and very little for the positive. by ommisions lack of progress and adding things which started out as being unthinkable {see 3pv coolant consumables} the remaining community doesn't know what to expect or where the project is going. it's that dicey at the moment, the backlash was totally warrented.

Well according to Russ Bullock as of yesterday Dec 16 2013 you really won't need to worry about a Clan faction affiliation until July 2014 at the earliest. Really right now all that is missing is PGI adding the 4 invading Clan options to the existing 7 current options on affiliation.
Only reason not to have had them as icons to select up till now was to hide the fact PGI was never planning on releasing CW before Clan entry into the game. Now that the cat is out of the bag, might as well allow Clan players select among Jade Falcon, Wolf, Ghost Bear, and Smoke Jaguar forum tags.

It's not PGI's fault, it's the spirit of THE DUKE!

Breaking the original curse has brought about His wrath!
THE DUKE IS DEAD! LONG LIVE THE DUKE!

They just advanced from "nothing" to "almost nothing plus a 5min powerpoint".
The only thing evident is: all of the original CW, IW and RW announcements were teasers, and not part of the design plan like it was pretended.

That's a bit of an over simplification. People aren't mad because they gave detailed and accurate information for once. They're pissed because PGI waited 2 years to come clean about things while seemingly being very deceptive and dishonest about they're progress just in order to increase sales of things like PP and Clans.
They're also slightly pissed about the whole "we can NOW put all of our resources into developing game content you want since we secured the license LAST WEEK"
Most are pissed because they were deliberately misled. There's really no other description for how PGI has handled things this year. Russ knowingly and deliberately got on a stage at the launch and flat out lied to the faces of all of his customers about release dates. He didn't just magically figure out a week ago that CW was possibly a year away from being implemented.

Then they introduced clans.
Designer A has not been talking to Designer B.
Their plans for CW are now messed up again ... so the clans will arrive before any of CW in game and we will see random distributions of clan and IS mechs thrown into matches.
Sigh ...

Yeah I notice they more or less said they were not even working on CW, and instead focusing all their efforts into the biggest sluttiest cash grab ever, because they thought microsoft was going to pull the ip in 2015, and they did not want to waste company time programming something that M$ was going to hose over.
Now that they have the IP until 2017, and a clause in place to extend that to 2020 (dependent solely on how much money they make microsoft, I am sure), they have reason to go forward with actually creating CW.

No your missing the key point. Nothing really has been built on CW yet. NOTHING. They haven't built the buckets. So now that we know that the Clans will be in game before the buckets arrive, bingo presto, those buckets when they are finally built and added will automatically separate IS vs Clan most likely based on what mechs your trying to drop with. Ergo the bucket plan was never intended to separate any type of House vs House warfare, but strictly separate IS v Clan.
forum tags affiliation and all that jazz will ultimately be meaningless, as if your trying to enter a match with a IS mech, it will add you to the IS bucket, and if your trying to drop in a OmniMech you will automatically be added to the Clan bucket.
Coding/building it that way is the path of least resistance, so its the direction it will take.

Unless they add phase 1 association when they add the clans, which basically would simply create segregated matches (IS vs Clan) based off what you try to drop in.
And again I will stress CW is being designed from the ground up as a strictly S v Clan system. Doing it that way solves any number of issues with match finding weighted against a dozen different possible match opponents weighted against players elo scores. The games population is no where near big enough to support that complex of a match system on the fly, so the bucket CW system will simply create matches in a very linear progression.
If they ever create a private match creation system (and yes I know they have talked about it, like everything else its vaporware till they add it) is where I think you will see the community itself create a dynamic House v House, Clan v Clan fighting for control of the political map CW.

It prolly won't be what mech you are in - it will be what tag you have next to your name. If you chose one of the five IS houses, you will be in the IS bucket, and if you chose any of the 7 clans, then you will be on the clan side.

For example, you are Fed Suns looking for a match on the Kurita Front. You will be placed into a bucket of 11 other Fed Suns/Fed Suns Mercs/Lone Wolfs and will be matched against another bucket of 12 Kurita/Kurita Mercs/Lone Wolfs.

Clans, while having individual factions, they were actually considered a single faction in the eyes of the Inner Sphere.
Thus, why could you not just have 9 different factions that you can belong to:
- Clans
- Davion
- FRR
- Kurita
- Liao
- Lone Wolves
- Marik
- Mercs
- Steiner
"Merc" units fighting for the "fringe worlds" can be "Clan" by only taking up Clan contracts and piloting Clan mechs. While this would still follow the same system for "Mercs", taken at face value they would 100% appear as Clans. This would separate the gameplay between the individuals who want more out of their game (Mercs) over individuals who just want to drop with a group of liked-minded (House affiliated) or those who just want to drop (Lone Wolves).
Beyond this, everything else can work according to the current accepted mechanics that is set down for CW.

So im gonna have to go the the clan wolf website and hopefully try to get admitted before i can raise my banner as a clanner? if i have to do it that way i will but i just think they should do the clans how they did the houses and put them as factions
P.S clan wolf has always been my fav clan
