I want to play the role of fire support in a Cataphract 3D. It will be my first owned mech.

I either need to retain the stock XL 280, or if selling it allows me a STD 300+ (Smurfy makes no sense here) would prefer that option.

I won't have the cbills for a larger XL.....grrrr. I had considered this option since it leaves me cbills to spare:

I see threads, posts and videos all over the interwebs for "brawler 3D's" & "long range 3D's." but precious little regarding fire support specifically.

If any experienced 'Phract pilots could toss me any useful Smurfy's. I'd be greatly obliged!

Thanks in advance,

#1 rule in MWO: Do not sell XL engines. They're way to expensive to grind out if you need them later.

#2 rule in MWO: You want lots of 300XLs and 280XLs, as they're some of the most common engines out there.

A 300 Standard is under 2 million , so it's not that hard to grind out.

That build isn't bad. There's a few other builds you can check out in the Show me your 'Phrat thread. You can also try the failry standard 3D Poptart build, that's also good for general long range fire support.

Keep the engine. It can be useful in almost anything from a Jenner to an Orion.

You have built a battle-ready mech yourself. The torso weapons have a similar range profile, the MLs will be handy for close work, and you get plenty of cooling for sustained fire. I would consider shaving off a ton of armor for another heatsink/ton of AC10 ammo (yes, you can run out with 60 shots).

If you want a poptart, you can do that as well. Everything is on the right side on purpose. This gets you better weapon convergence, and it leaves the entire left side as a shield. Playing it is kind of boring, but very potent once you learn the jump>start falling>fire cycle.

Great choice, 3D one of my favorites.

Follow the advice above, its good.

In the beginning it is rough grinding out the cbills needed for engines, weapons, upgrades etc. Keep with it and you will love the 3D. As stated above there are many different loadouts and playstyles that fit the 3D making it one of the best mechs in the game in my opinion. Lately I have been running 2x UAC 5 & 2x PPC, fun stuff.

Does this PPC build with the stock engine look solid enough? I applied some notions you guys shared here I think:

Looks pretty good. You may run out of ammo occasionally. After you level all elite your two heat related upgrades in basic will double their effectiveness. You may end up being able to take out 1 heat sink for ammo in the head. Heat vs ammo really.

This thing never overheats for me, lotsa armor, ammo & no XL explosions, thanks for the suggestion! It cored a standing Atlas in 12 seconds at Tourmaline!!
