Just played a match with my headset on and suddenly noticed a whole new array of sounds! Now I noticed that the engine in my 'Mech as it degrades from damage will change sounds, like it runs more poorly. This is not something I've heard before due me using my desktop speakers. Is this a feature or am I going slightly loopy?

Hmmm, I'm going to have turn ambient sounds up and listen the next time I play. I wouldn't put it past PGI to put that level of subtle detail in. I'll have to see next time.

What engine degradation? Always seemed like its 100% or destroyed to me.

It's not pr-say "degradation". It is the sounds of the engine being damaged and thus various redundancy systems kicking in, various hinges, sockets etc rocking around inside. When an engine runs less-then-optimal, it creates different sounds.

No, this is not your imagination.

I ran a Spider for a period, and I do know what it sounds like when it was "healthy". There's a clear different tone when it's not. I suspect every mech is affected like this.

I think this was added in the most recent patch (12/17) since it was the mega-music patch.

I don't know about degradation (to be honest your mind is on other things when you're at the point of taking damage), however in the last patch or two I have noticed a massive difference in the detail of engine and movement noises. Some more layers (whines, groans etc) have been added to thicken out the atmosphere. But it's very quiet and subtle, and gets masked the moment you're in the thick of it.

I believe the "distance" of hearing engine sound have also increase.
Last night, an Orion was walking pass me from drop and there was this roaring engine sound coming from the back and moving forward as he pass me.

Alright, I DID listen to both my Cat C4 and K2, tested them out in-game, and then purchased my Highlander and tested that out one time. None of the times I played, tonight, did I hear any difference in engine sounds. I think you must be hearing something else, some static in the background or something, because I heard nothing change. Sorry.

I can also hear a difference in sound, as you get more damage the sound lowers in pitch, as if the engine is "running" at low revs. Maybe it's more noticeable in lights because their engines have a higher pitched sound and you can notice the difference.

There IS a difference in engine sounds as you take major damage, i've had this across all my mechs.
Its a really nice touch, the sound guy/guys are doing a good job.
