I've been playing MWO on and off since June 2013, nowhere as long as some other folks, but I have come to really enjoy Medium mechs the most. I have a single heavy that I'll bring out if I'm feeling it, but otherwise, I just stick to my quick mechs.

Then the Skirmish gametype made its debut.

This is my go-to gametype, so I can avoid CapWarrior games and Light domination on conquest.

However, I noticed that my team seems to almost always be lighter than the enemy team. Just tonight, we had an all medium/light team against a lance of assaults backed up by a few heavies and mediums. Needless to say, we were crushed.

TL;DR

I'd like to even the playing field, and have saved up enough CB to purchase and outfit any of the assault mechs. My favorite, it terms of looks, is the Highlander. So which one would serve a mid range to long range player, like myself, best?

733c with 2 ppcs and ac/20 or 2 ac5s is the standard. Howeve you may find its lack of speed frustrating, in which case a Victor 9s or 9b with similar loadout and xl360 or xl350 ca work nicely. 78 kph with speed tweak.

The Highlander C and Heavy Metal are really the best Highlander variants at the moment. In addition to what JigglyMoobs said 2PPC + 2UAC5 is a very powerful Highlander C load out, if not the most powerful load out and chassis in the game right now. I agree also that the Victor B and S are good for more speed, however that 'mech has arms that are lower slung which can be a pain depending on how you play. Also although the Victor carries an XL engine OK, I guess, I'd still prefer a standard engine myself. Play around with both at http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ and don't forget the Highlander C is currently a trial 'mech so you can take it out for a spin.

You should test drive the Trial Highlander. It has sucky firepower, but you can improve this if you can tolerate the sluggish speed. However, the Victors might be more to your liking since they are quite a bit faster.

The Victor is far less frustrating, way more fun to play IMO due to the strong mobility. However in terms of durability and firepower it can not match the Highlander. If you have the money I recommend a Victor 9S with a 375 XL (350 XL gives you no capitalizable advantage in terms of loadout). If you are ok with being slow I recommend either a Highlander 733C (AC20 or double U/AC5 build) or a Highlander 732 with Gauss or AC10 (has the advantage of arm mounted missile pods). I would give the advantage to the Victor though, it's more fun to play IMO.

All 5 Highlanders can be deadly, same goes for all 4 Victors. Well rounded machines.

Check the hardpoints and pick the ones that suit your current playstyle.

Might quickly evolve into a current "flavor", but I'm having some excellent matches in mah Dragon Slayer with 2x AC/5 and 2x PPCs with an XL340. Could replicate the build on a 9B

I wouldn't call it having sucky firepower, but I think the OP should try it first and see what he feels like.

You should get 3 if you want a Highlander. If so, I recommend 732 (sniper) and 733C (brawler/poptart) first, then if you really like Highlanders then you may want to get Heavy Metal with MC. 733 is more of a missile boat, while 733P is an energy boat.

For Victors, the 9S and 9B are both solid brawlers, while the DS is good but requires MC like Heavy Metal. 9K used to be before Gauss change one of the best snipers, but now it's not as reliable.

I wouldn't be so quick to knock the Victor 9K. True, it can't boat ACs but it can load up on 3 medium lasers which, in my opinion, are superior in a brawl to 2 large lasers due to their rate of fire. It may not be the very best in regards to the current meta, but it can still be a fun mech. I tend to enjoy it more than my other Victors.
