I was wondering, since the clan tech is not set in stone as of yet according to the last announcement.

Would it be possible to instead setup the matchmaker to make drops between Clan and IS mechs asymmetrical and use BV or some other method to weight the drops along with ELO?

What is the consensus among the general playerbase here on MWO?

Without knowing how gimped the Clan tech is going to be, it's hard to say. As much as I'd like them to stick to the 5-Point Star formations (10 vs 12 or 5 vs 8), I wouldn't be adverse to them using a simple 8 vs 12 format if it works better.

Won't happen. Don't even have enough players as it is for a proper matchmaker.

Your vote options suck. IS vs Clans were always at 2:1 ratios because IS using half the weapons and less speed, while clan weaponry was longer ranged and more damaging.

Cant vote for it.

Well, considering that clan weaponry is going to be gimped, and IS mechs are no longer half the speed...I figured 2:1 was a bit over done. If we were talking entirely stock mechs as per TT rules, then I would concur entirely...however, IS mechs in their current state are far closer to omni mechs than they ever were in TT.

For example: In TT, no Atlas was ever faster than a Dire Wolf...in MWO, that has become a real possibility.

Wrong.
2:1 ration was based on 3025 tech BattleMechs. In MWO almost every customized 'Mech has some Star League level equipment. The gap is therefore narrowed.

So, I see the consensus so far is that we want uneven matches with Clan Tech to be as close to TT as possible. We will see what happens as the votes come in...

at star league tech vs clan tech slightly gimped, 8 vs 12 or 10 vs 16 is adequet. clans retain longer range and 100% flexibility, is gained star league double sinks, xl engines ect.

this is just something for them to consider as they fine tune clan ranges dmg heat weight slots and nerfs or just balancing the number of mechs or tons of teams.

2 Mechs can make a lot of difference. I think the IS company of 12 is a fair match against the Clan binary of 10 mechs. HOPEFULLY they won't nerf the Clans TOO much. They are supposed to be more powerful.

Problem with this thinking is the entire team will be Clan Tech (or IS tech).

What happens if they are mixed? This would fail.

Since IS Pilots will almost certainly be able to use Clam Mechs and Clantech itself will very likely be heavily nerfed, it is a no brainer to assume that it will stay at 12 vs 12.

IMO IS tech and Clan technic should not be mixable in a mech, say IS mech stays with IS tech and clan mech stays with clan tech. then, depending on the mech selected for the match the MM will add you to the IS or the clan side with 10vs12.

But I would also like to see a free for all 12vs12 with mixed IS/Clan teams but without mixed tech in the mechs.

Seems to be a bit of a runaway in favor of asymmetric drops so far...

I hope they do not implement mixed-tech or mixed drops.

As to ratio, it is hard to say without knowing how the weapons are to be balanced.

I'm hoping for 10 vs 12 : binary vs company.

Sorry, I would much much much rather they find a way to balance clan vs IS. I'm one of those players who isn't so locked up on lore.

To me, asymmetric teams would only be fun for the overpowered mechs. What would you rather be: the ants or the boot? It's much more fun to walk around in the OP mech and get lots of kills than it is to run around in the underpowered mech and depend on the swarm to win. We all know from PUGs that the swarm is highly unpredictable.

Asymmetric teams would only be fun for the clans, in my opinion. So I would rather have balance and equal teams.

EDIT: That said, I'm HUGELY in favor of uneven teams in an attack/defend sort of game mode, where the attacking side has more mechs and the fortified side has less. That would add great variety. But I don't want to see it uneven purely based on clan vs IS tech.

If people playing IS were playing with 3025-era tech, or even some 3050, then yes, 10-v-12 would still be horribly overbalanced in favor of Clan Wolf. However we are not playing with 3025-era tech, quineg?

In actuality, what we are seeing on the battlefield is Star League-vintage weapon systems, customizable by individual players. The first half of that equation is what ComStar used at the Battle of Tukayyid. The latter half, not even ComStar was able to give its MechWarrior's individually customized war machines. The militaries of the IS could not field similar forces, in part because while LosTech was being rediscovered it had not yet reached a level of general deployment, but also because the sheer cost involved. They could not afford to field regiments of Endo-Steel and Double HeatSink-equipped mechs.

With the reduced weapon advantage and inability to change engines that have been discussed as ameliorative changes to Clan Technology, a 10-v-12 is likely much more evenly matched, and allows both sides to field lore-specific tactical units. 3-lance Companies on the part of the IS, (or 2x 6-mech Level II for the wobblies) and a 2-star binary for Clan Wolf and its fellows.

A definite yes for asymmetric matches but I would keep the actual numbers flexible and depending on actual load outs (aka BV). Systems should be balanced in a way though that 8 vs 12 would be the most extreme difference.

I'll have to reread the announcements though. Currently I have the impression that clan an IS mechs can be on the same team. That would kill a number of easier matchmaking options and play into the super nerfed clan mechs as currently proposed.

One idea to make this work is to use tonnage limits and attach a weight multiplier to clan tech just for matchmaking purpose. A fully clan decked out 50 ton mech counting as 100 tons or a 100 ton IS with some clan tech weighting in at 120 tons. I fear the clan mechs will be P2win though and have a clear advantage so they can sell their overpriced packages.
