Actually, MWO IS an MMO. To explain, let's dive into some meanings/criteria/WHATEVER.
an MMORPG is an online RPG. an RPG is a game where your character gains experience and levels up, developing new skills and gradually getting more powerful as he does so. MWO will be online and it will involve developing skills and stuff, so it meets the criteria for being an MMO.
Let me put it this way, when someone thinks of WoW, GW, or something like that, they're not thinking of an MMO, they're thinking of a stereotypical MMO. Not all MMOs have to be like that, it's just that they usually are.
Um...not really. The definition of an MMORPG is, according to dictionary.com, "an internet-based computer game set in a virtual world, which can be played by many people at the same time, each of whom can interact with the others." There really isn't a "virtual world", all of the battles are single instances that affect an overall galaxy that we cannot otherwise interact with. Interaction between players is [/color]virtually nil, aside from chat and weapons fire. There are also no skills to develop in MWO, aside from the 'Mech chassis gaining extremely small bonuses that do not affect other variants. There are no pilot skills, the pilot trees unlock modules that can be bought and equipped to 'Mechs in a limited number depending on the chassis and variant.
MMORPG != MMO, MMORPG is a subgenre of MMOs. While I will say that MWO meets the criteria to be classified as an MMO, I stick with my assertion that it is not an MMORPG.
