I do not get this love for Heir to the Dragon at all. It told a good story, but it jumped around so much and had a very disjointed narrative. I think it would have made a fantastic trilogy, but jammed into one book it just... Man. It was a painful read.

I agree, BUT if you already have a good grasp of the canon timeline it works very well. I think the crux of the storyline was showing how Teddy was constantly under his father's scrutiny, and how far he would go to prove himself to Takashi, and the Dragon. I loved it personally.

Right there you did more to make me interested in that book than anything else I have seen or read. ;)
Gonna have to see if I can find it in one of the second hand stores or the like now. :D

I've read the Kerensky Trilogy and the first half of Twilight of the Clans. I know maybe I'm in a minority here but I really liked "The Hunters" by Thomas S. Gressman. A lot of the aspects of what makes battletech great are in this book: conniving politics from the leaders of the Inner Sphere and some cool mech battles. However, one thing that has made it stand out to me though is a solid chunk of space exploration and a really awesome space battle (think capitol ships and boarding parties and stuff). But I admittedly have barely scratched the surface with my limited selection of novels so far.

One question I wanted to ask folks is if any novels (published or fan-fic) have been set in a pre Battlemech era. I know this sounds crazy, but Battletech lore has such a rich and detailed history of times even before the Star League. Every now and then I check out http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Timeline and just marvel at the amount of back history that exists. It seems a shame to let it just sit as footnotes.
