The UI is not entirely intuitive (it's horrible) when it comes to upgrades so I'm not surprised you don't get it. Mechlab >> Loadout then click the right-most button that is an Atlas with a + sign on it to configure upgrades. Then, you have to drag and drop upgrades from the right most panel labelled Upgrades to the centre panel labelled Upgrades.

BTW I can't remember off the top of my head a good Hunchback build that uses FF. Experiment using this web mechlab which is much quicker and easer than using the real thing: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab

Ferro IS NOT BETTER ARMOR!!!!

All FF does is save you a bit of tonnage. Endo-steel is significantly better (usually it gives you at least 125% more tonnage than FF). That said, if you can mount both, do so, though I advise against doing it on mechs you might swap back and forth with.

Yeah, Ferro is a bit useless, but there are some Light mechs with room to spare, so it's not ALWAYS a complete waste, but there aren't a ton of builds that utilize it well, and for almost anything heavier than a light you're better off with Endo-Steel. Takes up the same room as FF, but will save you more tonnage, some of which you can allocate to armor and still be up over FF.

Actually, if it's an AC/20 HBK, that's one mech that can use both.

BUT always use Endo first, as noted above.

Never use Ferro over Endo. White Bear speaks the truth on this part. However, Ferro does work when you can fit it with Endo.

This happens more than you'd think, in particular with torso-heavy builds. The Centurion 9A 3x SRM6 2x ML for example runs Ferro AND Endo. You can even occasionally fit this on a heavy with a large engine to soak the heatsink space, such as the 6 LL Battlemaster configuration (not that I'd recommend that one).

Ferro is often found on light 'mechs along with Endo, and is very frequent there.

Long story short: Ferro is good. Ferro does not help your armor rating, but it does lighten the armor weight, so if you can free up 28 slots, put both Endo + Ferro on. It doesn't work for every 'mech, but it's nice when it does and can make the difference between a viable amount of ammo, and a 'mech that just won't quite fit.

EDIT: The Standard Engine AC/5 PPC Cataphract also benefits greatly from Ferro + Endo. Ferro is worse than Endo, again, but it's hardly useless as some will claim.

My HBK-4SP uses both Endo and Ferro; works rather well.

Just, as others have said, make sure you mount Endo first. If you still need tonnage and can still spare the slots, then get Ferro.

As stated, there are 'mechs in all weight classes that benefit from FF. You just have to put Endo on first.

actually, they changed all the "upgrades" to a drag and drop UI, compared to the old UI, which was actually MORE intuitive. FF would've made more sense in all mechwarrior games and in tabletop, if it took less criticals up than Endo. The concept behind FF is simple; if you build your mech to maximize weapons or heat efficiency, but to do that you sacrificed a ton or three of armor and you had the criticals left, you switch in FF in order to push your armor even higher to gain even more advantages. Unfortunately, since FF and Endo share exactly the same critical usage, and since both are floating or "dynamic" critical usage, there's no advantage to using FF over Endo, thus the lower weight savings of FF are meaningless if you aren't using Endo first.

iv switched a few mechs back to standard from ferro ( if you have endo and ferro together your often left with no crits ) you will struggle to reach your build weight.

importantly, never take ferro over endo. always take endo first.
