That's because you're new.
Anyway, both are pretty solid mechs. The Orion is probably the better of the two though.

I know Im new to MWO but I have been playing MW since the 90s.....Never liked JJ's...Its hard to break that.

I bought the K, V, and VA. Specially once mastered they all are quite good mechs. The big difference between them and the Thuds is the Orion are going to be centered around ballistics for their main weapon while the Thuds are more energy biased. 5SS with 2 PPC 5ML or a 5SE with 2PPC 3ML. 5S I found a couple of Ac5, PPC, and 3ML works well. Effective builds for the thud with the only negative being that I don't see a ton of other effective builds if I get bored down the line.

Ironically the paired PPC play very similar to the Orion since it is basically an energy AC20. I find both chassis similar in that they are generally consistent but not in blowing. They can take a good amount of punishment while usually dealing 400 damage or so on average.

Recently I've been playing the Thud a lot more but that could easily be simply because I just for access to them. I will say the high mounted energy weapons are a nice change from the Orion's low slung arms and torsos.

Orion is better. When you look at AC-20, combine it with (2+)SRM6 with Armetice and you get a super effectice can opener in short range. With LL for long range. STD engine because of AC-20 (thats the problem with torsomounted balistic, you go heavy AC-20 or 2Ultras = STD)

You fire AC-20 and 2SRM6 at the same time, they both are in torso, both have the same range. LL for tracking and long range.

Lets see what T-bold can do.

Booo it cant do anything good and it needs XL.

Im looking at synergy and i dont see any in T-bolt except 3LL in the torso and PPC+2AC5. While orion has perfect synergy. both arms has equal amount of energy, torso one side for ballistic one for energy. T-Bolt, balistic arm, the other arm has only one energy, torso are energy and missile, i dont know the T-bolt just dont feel right. +Orion can fit a bigger engine = cooler (aprox same max speed)

If i had a T-bolt i would make this:

PPC+2AC5 main hole maker, 2LL when i need it(when i lose PPC arm), 2streaks and balistics when i run hot. Downside XL, throw away PPC or LL or switch 2AC5 to AC10 or gauss and you probobly could fit STD

I am a Thunderbolt pilot and i can tell you that NEVER EVER use a XL in a thunderbolt. never.

Your thunderbolt build is an insult to how you use it. It wont even load due to the amount of heatsinks!

my 9SE has 2LL, 3ML and SRM4 + 6 with 2/3 jumpjets.. and my 9S runs either gauss, 4ML or LB10X, LRM15 and ERPPC. All having stock engines. The thunderbolt is designed as a support mech, Your not supposed to brawl for long periods of time with the mech. Pop out of cover here and there and it will work great.
Next time when you show loadouts try all of the variants, not just one.

I think the only unique property of Thunderbolts is being tanky. Its hitboxes direct the damage mostly to ST's, making you harder to take down. It also suffers from the Awesome syndrome; being too wide and fat for its tonnage. You just don't have the armor to sustain that profile.

Orion on the other hand, is slimmer than the TDR while being 10 tons heavier. This makes it extra tanky, it's "armor density" is higher. Its hitboxes are among the best in this game, once you get a feeling for them you can dictate where you take damage which is a big plus, especially in brawls. They can also mount a ridiculous amount of weapons even with STD engines. The only downside to Orions is the low slung hardpoints, meaning you have to fight on even ground. This is a problem on maps with a lot of hills, you will not be able to easily return fire against natural hillhumping opponents like Jagermechs and Stalkers. Protector solves this problem somewhat with that chest mounted energy slot though.

I'd say go for the Orions. TDR is a pretty average mech compared to Orions.

Orion seems a bit more versatile, but both are fun. I say just get em all!

old thread necro...I had the Orion k and the Thunderturd 5ss, got rid of them both.

The 5ss always ran too hot
The Orion consistently lost ST's.

They are two mechs that completely under perform compared to the popular Jager's and Phracts. Sadly I love the way the Orions look!

Both of these mechs are good brawlers. Only down point is no CT weapons. Now that the builds have been fixed You can go run a muck.

You don't want 4 tons of uncased ammo in your legs. if a ammo blow does happen the damage will transfer up the mech from the LL to LT to CT. So you would go boom long before used all that ammo up.

I know some dudes going to say oh Corbons wrong. Wasting tonnage using case.
