Is it possible to play with one of these? I mean the game is licensed from Microsoft after all PGI just rented it. I had to ask this because I am curious if this game is either too complex for it or not.

You can get the xbox 360 controller working by using a 360 dongle(ebay) and 3rd party software/driver. Lots of mucking around though. TBA not worth unless you plan to play on a TV screen a couple of feet/metres away.
Try my thread and search on forums for a couple of others

Phils just jealous 'cuz he doesn't have any controllers. Personally, I'm looking forward to Microsoft integrating the Xbox One controller for PC later in the year. For this game I prefer mouse and keyboard, but for the majority of PC games I play, the controller just feels so much better. I mean, the 360 controller is almost "the perfect" controller, but the Xbox One controller Is even better with Its real directional pad.

The answer to "Is it possible to play" is yes. You will need to use third party applications such as UJR and/or Xpadder to map everything.

Please read LocNar's Controls Demystified(?) thread to understand why this will be a less than optimal control arrangement.

Also ThePhil, I have come to expect better from DHB members.

The very short version is that you probably should avoid the Xbox 360 controller like the plague. The short throw on the sticks will bollix you even more than a top of the line HOTAS, which is already very ineffective with the way they did Joystick control.

Sorry. I am a passionate Joystick player and I would advise against it unless you have a very high frustration threshold.

I'm still having fun using the Xbox 360 controller going to x52 pro soon. Both nowhere near accurate as KB+m. But the controller is wicked with light mechs +120kph
