Or even just a "drop 50 matches in a trial" challenge. Let the noobs feel like they have a chance.

This would be interesting and a nice change from the min/max builds I run and fight all the time. I'd go for this....now I just gotta figure out how to run a trial mech, never done it:)

personally I'd like to a see a PVE line which allowed new players to practice the basics and get familiar with maps. It would also get them a few "free" unlocks to enable them to be a little more effective in the melting pot.
