How it feels to squirrel the enemy team in a Locust:
Your score may be low - but few doubt that you helped immensely.

I think my best achievement in a locust is when I got focused down by 3 boomjagers, and they spent over a minute firing at me and missing. I could've sworn one of them was hit by his teammates as I zoomed past him. I spent a solid minute or more just dancing around and in between them, drawing their fire from my team. They didn't stop chasing until one of them had their rear CT introduced to a boomjager of our own. By that point it was 9 to 4 and they were basically done.

One false move and you get one shot killed.
Mastering a Locust is a long tuff road that few people have the guts to achieve. I am still trying to master mine.

Which actually makes Locusts one of the few 'Mechs that actually pilot like a light 'Mech in the tabletop would. Speed is survival, a bad roll and you're done. What really kills the missile Locust for me is how little ammo per ton you get for SRMs. For just 4 SRM2s I have to carry half again the tonnage of my primary damage weapons to get one minute of fire.

It really is. I've mastered a few 'Mechs and the locust is taking the most time by far. If I weren't simultaneously trying to scrape up cash for a CN9-D I'd bring arty and UAVs every match.
It's also a little annoying that the DHS upgrade is applied on a per-chassis basis instead of on a per-engine basis. For a locust that's like paying for your whole ride all over again. I'd have engines individually upgradeable to DHS for 5500 c-bills times the engine rating. Maybe more or less for an XL vs a standard. Then have a 100k c bill cost for swapping out an engine on a ride. Or something.
I've been spending too much time in the feature suggestion forums.

the DHS upgrade is a bit costly, but honestly, it still makes sense. The upgrades are supposed to be super costly, that's why there are so few custom mechs out there. Even for merc corps. The costs are almost prohibitive. Most people run stock builds, because that's affordable for them (in lore).

The problem with DHS upgrades' cost isn't just the cost itself. It's the fact that, if you want to be any good, you NEED to upgrade to DHS. With the way heat works in MW:O, you really don't have a choice. This defeats the whole point of having to choose between weight and space when selecting heat sink type. The difference in heat efficiency is just too drastic.
I can't think of any other upgrade or pilot/mech skill that even comes close to making as much of a difference in your performance as DHS does. The real cost of every mech in MW:O is x + 1.5 million extra, with x being the stated C-bill price of the mech.

Honestly the cost bugs me less than the fact that it's a chassis modification and not an engine modification. That's the bit that doesn't make sense.

Had some good fun already with the 1V (4MG and a SL), the 3M (5 SPL's, this one runs really hot, maybe I'll try 5 SL instead, don't want to upgrade to DHS really).
The 3S is more tricky. Ran a 4 SRM2 build just once (on Terra Therma) and found it hard to deal with the heat. Those 2 tons of ammo also don't last forever.
Quite a lot of ways to build it though. 2 Lrm5 +TAG/ML, 2 SSRM2's + ML, ERLL + 1 extra HS, guess I'll be trying a lot of different builds with that one.

The 5SPL build does require some discipline. Also, you definitely need to have your elites bonus for it to get into extra good levels of damage.
The 1V is the easiest in my opinion to work with. 1ML 4MGs, 3 tons of ammo, and you can go as crazy as you want.

Mostly shooting for XLs and taking shots at anything open. Neither match had any damage farms in them. LOT of shoot and scoot and staying off the radar and multiple assault kills. The Locust doesnt always work but when it does its a revelation.

Seriously, those numbers, and those were not games with lots of light mechs. You were almost never dealing with mechs your weight class.

Lol, Thats why those numbers happened. The 3M has Jenner F firepower in a faster, more maneuverable (on ground) package and I've always been of a kill the assaults first kind of mindset (If you recall from our couple of duels I either left you for last or traded a couple of shots and broke contact for other prey) It should be noted though that both matches were in 4 man teams on coms and when I'm running a wolfpack I'll tend to coordinate a clock style attack where one maneuverable mech gets fatty's attention and another comes from behind to rip his back out.
