Holy crap, just played my first match in the PB, and yeah, with very minor (superficial even) changes, it feels pretty good to go right out of the gate.

BUT...

For the love of freaky weasels, we either need to get the muzzle flash from those MGs toned down just a bit, or we need some kind of window tint/cockpit glass glare shield/great big old Locust sized sunglasses for it, like, now.

Holy Epileptic Disco Rave Batman!

2nd match down. With Tarogato. I think I ran into him coming around the corner of a building. Not my finest moment. Going to start wearing Ray-Bans when I pilot this thing...

Yup, you sure did run into me! Didn't hurt me any, but you took the brunt of my laz0rs because I didn't see your dorito in time and thought you were an enemy, so my bad. =P

Muzzle flash is a bit toned down in night vision, so maybe experiment with that. I use it whenever I'm getting dakka'd hard in the face and can't see 3 meters in front of me. ;)

locust is good for its weight. But fairly fought vs a 35 tonner, it WILL LOSE every time. As a CW mech I think its a fantastic weight reducing tool, but in normal game modes you are killing your team by bringing that pathetic mech.

IMO firestarters are better than locusts for killing and general fighting.

Don't buy that for a sec.
My Metric for success is the amount of Tonnage I bring down in a match. So far, vs my Ravens, the Locusts are winning everytime.
Maybe you think its a detriment, and that opinion you are entitled to. However on more than one occasion games that have a few loci working together have done better than any other lights in the match.

Any of you folks here feel free to add me to the friend list on the forums and/or in-game. If not tonight, I'd definitely be interested in this some other time.

While double checking if I have added you or not, I accidentally unfriended you. Now it's not letting me add you again.

Tonight I bought the pirates bane, and promptly slapped an xl170 and AC2 on it - I consistently get one kill and at least a half dozen assists.

Thanks for the tips, everyone.
Never realized you could drop those unused armor for some extra weight. Even with the default armor, it was very possible to get 1shotted, so keeping the dead weight on me just felt really silly).
I've been doing a good bit better. (At least I can eek out 60-70 damage now, instead of 10 to 20, haha). Still has to do a good bit to kit out the mech. I finally found where to skill up my mech, and that extra acceleration helped a ton. Can't wait to earn enough to start throwing those XL engines in.

I tried out the missile variant, and while I'm pretty damn horrible at it, I find it to be the best looking of the bunch.

Another question: if you buy a Locust camo, does it become available for every variant, as well as other mechs? Or are the camo Locust specific?
For your convenience, my Colour / Camo Guide.

View PostOvion, on 27 September 2014 - 04:54 AM, said:

Ok, so this is how Camo and Colours work:

Camo Patterns comes in 2 flavours - Unlock and One-Shot.
Unlocks are a permament unlock for that Chasis. You can change the pattern as often as you like.
They are pricey though, running you either 750 MC for a 'standard' pattern and 1250 MC for a 'premium' pattern.

One-Shot camos are one-use patterns. You can change the Colours as often as you like, but if you change the pattern, you lose the One-Shot.
They're great if you don't intend to change the pattern around.
The bonus of this is they cost 1/10th that of an Unlock, at 75MC a 'standard' pattern and 125MC a 'premium' pattern.

So if you only want to do 3 mechs, and leave them at that single pattern forever, then One-Shots are the way to go for you!
You can even have 3 different patterns if you want.

There have been Camo sales in the past (normally 50% off), so you could always wait for one of those, but I generally recommend one-shots.
If it's on sale and there's 2 Camo's you'll regularly want on one chasis (or 5+ mechs you want it on), then go unlock.
Example -
I have bought One-Shot Camo Specs for each of my 3 Spiders, 3 Catapults, and one Cicada (Phranken), 1 for my 4th (Urbie)Spider (Sherman), and 1 for my Dire Wolf B (Snowfall).
That's 9 mechs with Camo, for less than the cost of 1 unlock.
I'm considering buying one-shots for a couple more of my mechs, like my Jaegers, new Cicada and Ravens.
I don't really want to change any of these, mostly because the others are sort of pants on those mechs (in my opinion) so it works out MASSIVELY cheaper.

I've also bought the Phranken Unlock for my locusts when it was on sale, as I have 5 of them and at that point it cost the same as getting the One-Shots.
I also want Hotrod and standard on my locusts at a whim, so this works out better.
I'm just waiting for Hotrod to be on sale on Locusts, then I'll buy the unlock.

Colours come in 3 flavours - Basic, Standard and Premium.
All colours are a universale unlock - purchase once, and that colour is permamantly available for all your mechs.
Basic Colours are the 5 free colours in the game.
You get Basic Green by default, and the remaining 4 are available for 1.25million C-Bills each.
They're actually not bad, I think the Red is nicer than most of the Premium Reds too.
Especially good as a Block colour, or highlight.
As modeled by the lovely Locust below:
Spoiler

Standard Colours are generally, just a straight shade really.
These cost 500MC and come in a wide range.

Premimum Colours are either more desirable (i.e. - pure black and white), or specifically linked to particular Premium Camos (i.e. - the colours that are 'meant' to go with the scheme).
These cost 1000MC and come in a wide range of slightly nicer shades.

Ultimately, I recommend never buying any colours apart from Basic, unless it's 50% off.
Additionally, Camo shades are a fantastic range of matte Standard colours, so 250MC on sale.
I've got 1/3 to half of the Camo colours and tend to buy more each time they go on sale.

I just got the PB and was playing around with it. I dropped the machineguns and slap 4 medium lasers on it. I'm starting to be doing damage in the 100-ish range now (yay!) Having an XL engine right out of the gate is very nice. It's vastly better than my other Locusts simply because of the extra speed and firepower.

I'm wondering about the ECM though. It seems that I'm still getting locked and killed by rockets a lot of times. Should I have the ECM on disrupt or counter mode to prevent lockon on my team? (I'm thinking disrupt, since it shows the eye icon).

Disrupt.

BAP has become very good at shutting down ECM. Also, if you are getting TAG'd or NARC'd, it will punch through ECM. FOr maximum stealth lulz, combine ECM with Radar Deprivation module.

Statistically, my highest kill per match ratio is in locusts, but they are also my most recent mechs so they only had to overcome the "omg locusts are not like my other mechs" learning curve. Not the "why am I running left while I am facing right; I am sure this spider can stare down a timberwolf; what?!? Your friends' guns hurt you too?" Learning curve.

I finally bought my first light mech, a LCT-3M, to round out my mech selection for CW, and I have to say I'm impressed. I have an old-but-excellent-at-the-time rig, so my frames aren't that great, which is why I mostly stuck to heavies and assaults before. Trying out the Locust really surprised me. I've always had a lot of respect for the people who pilot them, but I never thought I could be one. Turns out I was wrong! Of course I'm not nearly as good as some of the people in this thread, but even without training I've been able to survive matches, do decent damage and even get some kills. Maybe it's the new quirks, but these machines are really mean. :)
