Counterstrike in Walking Tanks is actually pretty close to reality, thinking about it.

No respawn, short time-to-kill, huge disparity between experienced/new players...

And every time I lob an artillery strike in, I think "used my grenade".

No one is Rambo in this game. Except maybe me... ;) , but for all intents and purposes, you will not be the hero. So don't try. Just try to contribute, and live. Then learn when the right moment is to commit yourself to the fray. (so your teammates aren't left outgunned as cannon-fodder)

This is true... just don't hang back too far for too long. If you see 2 or 3 of your unit mates get pounced on try to wade in and give them some help. Too often I see pilots (noobs or vets, i don't know) hanging back and letting unit mates get annihilated, and allowing their unit to lose a few mechs early in a match.
If you're going to jump into a fray... imo it's better to do it earlier in a match when the teams are numerically even... rather than wait too long to help out and letting your opponents sweep the field with their 8 mechs vs your beat up remaining 3 or 4.

Last night was really bad for this. It seemed like every match was packed with guys intent on just being the last guy standing on their team... even if it meant their team lost 12-2.

You will encounter stat warriors that are afraid to fight and possibly lower their precious KDR.

But what's the fun in that?

The fun is in the fight. I love a good fight that has me at the edge of my seat with my pulse racing.

If I get a kill or two and go down swinging, I call it a good match.

Good to see you're having fun, Mott. ;)

Dont forget those moments where you need the voice command shortcuts ("close in on me!") to get some of those teammates to stop running into walls because they momentarily forgot which directions their legs are facing ;) .

Good to have you on bord Mott.

When you got this much fun after a week, imagine what fun it is once you can seriously kick some butt!
I strongly advise you to go and look for a unit that takes you under their wings.
When youre in a 4 man premade and on TS it just gets better.

Battletech fans have always been great in building communities of their own, and MW:O really profits from that.

After you have gotten used to the 4 man PUG games, then the next step after that is the 12 v 12 games which is once again a whole new level ontop. Organised games between 2 units will be like learning a whole new game if you get to the competitive level.

I'm a little confused... all the PUGs i've been in (skirmish and conquest) have been 12vs12 already...

12-man pre-made full teams is what he meant.

It's a step most players never take in truth (for various reasons), but it certainly is the highest level of play.

The PUG games only allow up to 4 players per linked group within the 12 player team.

There is a different mode where you take 12 players in one linked and fixed group and play against 12 others who are also in a 12 player group.

nice post..glad to see a bit more positivity for newer players other than the whining of the 'im uninstalling because the game is too hard' nonsense :)

Sort of curious.... It says you have been a member since Nov 2011, why did you wait for over two years before you started playing?

check out www.frrhub.tk if you would like to meet other FRR pilots.

Better things to do. Work, travel, wedding, moving, starting a young family... lol

The typical RL distractions. Even now that things have settled down, i still have difficulty finding much time to play. Still haven't even hit 150 matches.

I vaguely remember joining the forums as part of a call to action from one of the Northwind Highlander groups... was accepted and then kinda faded away. Can't even remember which unit it was or figure out how to reconnect.

Mott,
If you're looking for a good unit to join, please do consider The Templars. We're a Merc Unit that operates with Class, Honor, and Distinction. http://thetemplars.enjin.com/. You'll need first join Enjin.com, and then sign up on the Templars page.
Good Luck and Good Hunting!

Mott, many clans and groups use the enjin.com website for their basis and also have their own TS server. If you ever need a clan, the Robinson Rangers Brigade are always recruiting, and we are one of the best Davion units when using our actual companies in 12 mans (not just random people from different lances and companies) as well as having a pretty big player group to choose from. If not, you can look on the enjin website, they have various clans on there that you can look at, I know I saw some FRR clans and clan Blood Spirit clans, although I am not sure how large they are.

Enjoy the game as long as you can, maybe we can get a few updates this year and more players will come back. Win or lose, I enjoy the game almost ever time I play.

Mott you almost brought a tear to my eye with that fantastic post and analysis. Thank you. If I ever run into someone griping about the game and not understanding why they should play it, I will link them this thread.

Ditto this sentiment! I'm bookmarking your post so I can pass it on to those who could use the advice.

I have been playing for 13 months now. Although I enjoyed the game as a lone wolf, it really became a blast when I learned to play with other people. If you haven't already, install Teamspeak and then go find a public MWO channel. Get in the scramble and team up with other enthusiastic mech pilots. Your skills will improve dramatically and you'll have a blast.

I recommend the Comstar public channel (na1.mech-connect.net) but there are plenty of other good ones out there as well. I hope to see you out in the game soon. Welcome to the game and thanks for the great post!
