New cockpit item!

Jokes aside, I for one am looking forward to this. Anything that gets me (even) more immersed in the game and adds to the sim factor. Certainly, this is more exciting than the umpteenth Hero 'Mech. Possibly even more exciting than a new map, given that this has the potential to increase my fun level in every match.

LOSTECH!!!

Well i for one like the effect of motion blur in games, but after 5 mins my eyes start to hurt and shred tears due the strain it poses to me..

Also there is people who want to most fast/responsibe and less intrusive effects in a game in order to play with advantage.

So, if it's "just glass" then it's literally nothing then? I mean the cockpits ALREADY HAVE GLASS! And we already look through it! Why even announce that this is going to be a thing then?

Right now there's nothing on the cockpit canopy...it's open air.

The glass is just a visual embellishment so that it looks like there's actually something on the canopy instead of open air.

They announced it because many of us have been asking for it from the beginning. It's basically just going to be a subtle detail that makes it look a little bit more realistic.

It's doubtful that it will obstruct view; it will most likely just be some grime and some minor scuffing around the edges.

I thought the cockpits weren't glass but metal covered in emag spectrum sensors that essentially mimics transparency.

at first the glass is just visual glass to immerse you in the cockpit. But my hope is a next step would be cracks etc

inb4 demand for pilot should die when cockpit is breached in HPG, Caustic, Therma. Because immersion.

There's a lot of fluff that describes how the cockpit viewing screen/window functions, but for all intents and purposes it's an armored window that can accumulate grime and scuffing along the edges.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could actually open our cockpits if the glass takes a visually ruinous effect? (IE cracks or some other effect that obstructs vision)

By opening the tarnished cockpit window maybe you could reduce health to 1 or something

That would be pretty interesting. It could work similarly to shutdown override. It would be nice to have some visual animation with it as well with explosive bolts busting around the edges and the glass just falling away. The pilot image on the main screen already looks like you're wearing an air mask and pressurized suit, so it could work on all maps. I like the idea that it would drop the cockpit health to 1 so essentially you could get killed with one stray bullet from an mg.

I doubt people would use it much, but it would still be a fun feature.

Also, someone mentioned it before, but I too was under the impression that this patch would involve updating the HUD to project onto the glass.

I just played a match on Tourmaline with the new cockpit glass. Maybe it's just the map, but so far all it adds to the game is reduced visibility and annoying dirt effects. People who freak out about realism in a sci-fi giant robot game in space will probably love it, but people who just want good gameplay (me) aren't going to be very fond of it.

EDIT: Just played on Mordor. It's not nearly as obnoxious as Tourmaline, but there are still annoying spots.

I did read somewhere that the final effect won't be as pronounced when the glass goes live.

Oh I can see now.
1.Bug splats.
2.Bird poop.
3.Cracks.
4.Mud.
5.Dust.
6.Grease,grime and lubricant stains.
7. Broken wind shield wipers "soon".
8.Forgetting to refill windshield wiper fluid "15mc" ya know it's gonna happen.
9.Bullet holes, and abrasions.
10. And last but not least our old hated friend Mr.Filmgrain added to the mix.
Just what we need more immersive target obstruction.
C'mon on man!

Because motionblur in closed beta means you see 5 mechs with 15 legs when running at over 60kph, and after 30 minutes gave you a head ache and after 45 minutes a migraine the kind where you want to puke.

filmgrain, motion blur, and knock down griefing were the worse things about closed beta followed by screw all analog support for those of us that have to use joysticks for one reason or another.

Seems over the next two months we're getting all the bad back

Isn't that what they have on the Pacific Rim Jaegers?
