While piloting my LCT-1V earlier, I was marveling at how crazy short the ER LL beam duration is on that mech due to its quirks, and then I found myself wondering how exactly a quirk like reduced laser duration works from a technical standpoint. Does the laser try to apply its normal amount of damage in a shorter period of time (meaning the number of times it deals damage is increased) or is the damage per tick increased appropriately while dealing damage at the same frequency as usual?

For the sake of argument I'm going to change the actual stats of the ER LL to make it easier for an example, so let's say it does 1 damage every 0.1 seconds over 1 second which is its beam duration and for a total of 10 damage. When this modified ER LL has its beam duration reduced by 50% (like it is in the LCT-1V) does it:
A) Apply 1 damage every 0.05 seconds over 0.5 seconds
or
B) Apply 2 damage every 0.1 seconds over 0.5 seconds

I must admit that part of the reason I'm wondering about this is whether lasers with shortened duration perform worse because option A applies, despite this game being known to have hit registration issues, rather than option B which would I think pretty clearly not affect hit registration. Note that I'm not really trying to jump to conclusions here, but it is something I'm curious about.

Here's a thought: Can we get an in-game benchmark? Laps of River City, 24 walking MirvWarriors blowing the crap out'a each other? With or without settings guidance, maybe you could put it under the noeses of some tech sites, for Great Plugs Press? Posted Image

Pardon me if this has already been answered, but have the recent HUD performance improvements to MW:O come from updating MW:O to Scaleform 4 (or latest, not sure), or has it come from a general optimization and improvement of code in the HUD department?

Either way, I am really happy you guys did optimize something! Now getting an average of 10-15 more fps per match!

Hi Karl,

Thanks very much for your very useful posts and insights over the months (years?) this thread has been running. However, you've been out of this thread since Christmas ... I was wondering if you are ok? Anyway, if you are still around, could you let us know whether you will be back to this thread at some point or if you are unlikely to have time for it in the future.

Either way, thanks very much for your contributions!

I forget if this was asked before, but "How and why where the AA modes chosen?" If it's not called "PostAA," it's absurdly punishing, for unpublished reasons …

He doesn't work for PGI anymore, went to Amazon in February, according to his LinkedIn profile.

In their defense, this looks like a great career move for Mr. Berg, so it probably had nothing to do with PGI at all.

Yeah. That really makes me sad - it's the end of a milestone, certainly. Even if someone else picks up the thread, it won't be "Ask Karl Berg" any more.

My Apologies. I intended multiple times to inform the community in a command chair post that Karl was no longer with us. We were really lucky to have a dedicated engineer of his caliber work on our product and for our studio for the past ~5 years. He was one of the most self motivated people I have ever known and was only interested in making a great product. We wish him nothing but the best.

Yes thank you. Karl loved working here and loved the product, but just could not turn down the opportunity he received. We completely understood and were grateful to have him as long as we did.

Thanks, Russ.

So...with Karl gone, do you have anyone in mind to replace Karl as our "technical window" into PGI's goings-on? We all appreciate your activeness on Twitter, but it really shouldn't have to be the president taking on that role, as you've probably got a ton of things on your plate and aren't in a position to delve into the technical side of things.
