I love this game it's a little bit of a learning curve to get going at first but lots of bangs " pew pews " and cashwacks ! lovely.
My problem is I see referenced in the forums something called " ghost heat " but no explanation to what or how it is implicated in the game.
I also seem to be drawing a little creative feed back from other players ( shot at by my own team ) I'm a little confused by this . . . ? I seems counter productive .
I have bought the book " Decision at thunder rift. " to try and get an idea of the background is there another book that would really help with this ?
Many thanks for helpful feed back and criticism .

It's essentially just extra heat that you gain by firing x number of the same weapons at the same time. See the table, everything in green is just normal heat. Yellow has the numbers of the extra heat. It's a limitation for using multiples of PPC's or AC/20's on a mech in order to one shot people.

If friendlies shoot you on purpose, make screenshots and report their ***** to support@mwomercs.com. The rules specifically prohibit that, and the GMs do take action.

Friendly fire is generally active, so watch where you shoot and try to not walk into allied fire lines. There will be occasional allied damage due to the chaos of battle.
And then there are a few {Surat} who think they need to punish you for whatever. If you feel like it, you can report them for griefing, which is not allowed. But since you are a sloth like me, you probably don't care enough either

Oh, and please use the link in my signature next time. It leads to a stickied topic that is used for quick stuff.

Getting the other two books in that trilogy - 'Mercenary's Star', and 'The Price of Glory' - is a good idea. It follows the creation and early exploits of one of Battletech's most lore-famous mercenary units, the Gray Death Legion. You should probably avoid 'Sword and Dagger', though. It was published between 'Decision at...' and 'Mercenary's Star', and is a little weird, even for BT lore.
You can find a list of .epub versions for free download here. They're listed by publication date.

However, one thing to note is that this only applies to intentional friendly fire.
If you are in the middle of a big fight and you cross the line of fir of someone else, then any friendly fire is most probably accidentally and should be avoided through maneuvering and positioning. To avoid this, you should observer where the enemy is, were your teammates are and try to walk around the back of your teammate if he is already shooting at the opponent. Also, if you are fighting in close quarters, try not to get too close, as you will then block a very big portion of the firing lines which your teammates could be using to hit the same target. At least 75 meters distance to your opponent should be more than enough to safely make sure you are not shot too often by your teammates.

The smurfy link is awesome . . .
I'm enjoying the book, though it is a little " high school " lol

Yeah... I just started on the Michael Stackpole stuff, and it's even more high-school. So far, the Gray Death books are my favourites (although I'm not very far through). I've been told that the Jade Falcon books are pretty good.
It's all pretty much just pulp fiction, though. It does the job

I can't help but chuckle when people tell me his characters are great and feel real, etc. The man himself admitted he's terrible at writing people - he much prefers describing events. I cringe when I watch two people have a conversation; not for the dialogue so much as the weird exposition-thought-monologue that goes with it. "Little do you know that it is I, <insert name> that will best YOU, <insert antagonist> rather than the other way round! I am too clever and awesome and well-resourced! Ah-ha-ha-HA!"

I hate the way he starts every scene with a florid description of what the characters are wearing.
Other BattleTech authors wrote better prose, IMHO.

So your saying the Last Airbender has better or worse dialogue?
And welcome Sloth and don't let learning curve turn you off from the game.
And if we meet on the battlefield I promise only to shoot you enough to kill you.

Edustaja has already provided you with a link; but essentially if you fire more than a certain number of the same or similar (linked) weapons at the same time or within 0.49 seconds of each other, you get punished with excess heat. Many of us consider it a really bad bandaid for an underlying problem that needs a serious address, but it has been this way for a year. It won't be changing.

When you first start, most of the players with you are also very new or new as of the last three weeks. Some are at the peak of frustration as half of them don't know what they're doing, and the other half who clicked in right away are frustrated beyond imagination. Such things will pass as you 'evolve' up or down the matchmaker and out of that bracket. There's also kids that play and sometimes they are just...clueless. After all your team is both teal and blue (which looks like red to the colorblind) while the enemies are red.

There's maybe a hundred books. Some of mention: Lethal Heritage. Temptation By War. Binding Force. Illusions of Victory. Price of Glory. Patriots and Tyrants. Storms of Fate (because King Crab.)
But if you want to sit back and get a lot of information real fast... Watch this to learn about the Inner Sphere (Liao, Steiner, Kurita, etc., etc., etc.). Then this to learn about the invading force known as the Clans.
I also recommend checking out the intro videos of Mechwarrior 2 (Ghost Bear's Legacy, Mercs), 3, 4 (and its expansions vengeance and mercs), and MechCommander 1 and 2.

I might be wrong about this but I think new players start out in Windowed mode until they change it. If you're alt+tabbed out and CLICK to get back in, you'll fire your weapons...Could be a case of that!

I usually turn on my music right as a match begins, so I do this as well out of forgetting to start the music beforehand.
Or someone texts me on Skype and I tab out forgetting that it makes me shoot everything. >_<
Bad habit. Nice to see I'm not the only one.
Now this is possible, but he could actually still be encountering the Disgruntled Mechpilot Militia, and their just deciding to take their frustrations out on him. Its hard to tell without having a complete recount from multiple sources or a video. :S
