Is trash talking really all that bad?
Do you and other fellow gamers really not enjoy a little trash talking here and there?
Is there actually a limit on trash talking?
How much trash talking can one person tolerate?
Do you believe trash talking is a part of life and should be shared on the net?
Do you trash talk?
Why or why not?

Honestly I believe trash talking shouldn't be frowned upon. I honestly believe trash talking brings in competition and allows people to play a little harder. I mean why is trash talking get bad rep on video games but not In real life. I play basketball for my school and we talk **** every time. Go ahead and watch some football soccer basketball any sport that is really competitive, all you will see is trash talking. During sports its not frowned down on. But what the problem with **** talking on the net?? Feelings can be hurt either way.
I just want some other people's opinion on this, not that it is really going to change my mind I'm going to continue to trash talk on MWO either way so if you see me don't hesitate to talk trash back.

Trash talking is bad, in game or within the real world. I can elaborate, but view this more as a societal problem.

For me:
Yes
No
Yes, and that limit is in different places for different people. As you're playing with random strangers from different cultures, its best just to refrain.
See above.
No. I believe in sportsmanship.
No.

See reasoning above. When playing with strangers you should show good sportsmanship. Maybe that's not important to your schoolyard gaming, but once you're playing internationally it becomes ever more important.

While friends kidding around with each other is one thing, once trash talking extends to strangers I'm rather of the belief that its showing a lack of character, and it just gets called "friendly trash talk" as an excuse, and usually isn't actually meant in any kind of friendly way.

As Winters said. It's fine as long as you know how your... 'target', I guess(?) is going to take it. Friendly banter can be hilarious between a group of friends.

'Dude, how did you miss him? He's piloting an Awesome, and was right in front of you. Like, a brick wall across a highway. Not even a sporting chance. And you MISSED.'

^This is fine if I were to say it to one of my corp-mates, say, over comms. Tone of voice is apparent, and we're likely friends anyway shooting the breeze on MWO. If I were typing it to a team-mate off-comms, who may or may not be new, having lag problems, legitimately out of practise, and also can't hear how I mean it to sound... there are all sorts of potential problems.

I think the main reason they won't put in VOIP is they are afraid of trash talking not being able to be moderated as easily as log searching.

I agree I have a thick skin but this is the first game I have played online where I have gotten warnings for my trash talk (more defending myself) but hey when you win the argument you're the one who gets reported...

If you're among friends, you can all reach a consensus as to how you're going to treat each other. Some people like to play rough!

On the other hand, the way you carry yourself among strangers is telling. It feels good to pull off an amazing win, whether its a close victory or a massive domination. It feels good for all of us, but the difference between a good sport and an a**-hat is whether or not they can enjoy their win without trying to make their already-vanquished opponent feel even worse with post-fight trash-talk. I personally try to let my performance speak for itself.

I don't think this applies to role-play trash-talk. A player flying FS colors says "Kurita Scum..." What else are they supposed to say?

Just don't get personal. You're not impressing anyone, you look like a jerk, and you turn-off new players who, as most of us recall from our own n00by-flavored beginnings, are already running at a high level of frustration. Fewer new players means a less robust player-base, which in turn means longer wait times, crappy matchmaking... you know, all the things you come here to whine about when you're not in-game talking trash.

*Trash talk... sorry, I'm a sucker for irony and I couldn't help myself. Seriously, though. I come across your posts all the time and always check out what you have to say, Shar. They're insightful and a treat to read.

Well.... I am glad somebody thinks so. ;)

Edit:
I am still rather seeing how being "polite" (GG, or as I prefer to type: Well Fought) can be take as being "rude" unless you are so paranoid that you seem to think it is meant as an insult....

Yeah, I saw a post on this the other day, and there used to be more of them a few months ago. We were talking about excessive trash-talk being the hallmark of a poor winner. Some people can't accept that we all sometimes lose --badly-- but that doesn't mean our opponents don't respect our effort. It's the equivalent of the winner offering their hand at the end of any competition and the loser refusing to accept it, the hallmark of a poor loser.

Trashtalking is a weapon. If you make smb mad at you he is more likely to make a mistake. Like focusing your fresh Jenner when there are 3 cherry-red Atlases shooting him same time.

There is too many babies in the game. Since I have gotten reported I stopped typing. I won't even tell them where the enemy is or give advice anymore just leads to trash talking then getting reported because my trash-fu is better than their ****-chi.

I grew up on Xbox Live trash talk was the norm I take no offense and rarely mean what I say (I USE HEAVY SARCASM) . It's like a second language that seems forbidden for some unknown reason. Xbox Live cracked down too. Too many babies in the world, very few strong minded thick skinned exists these days. I feel like the last Furian warrior (See Riddick)

I feel if someone provokes you and you beat the {Scrap} out of them you're in the right and they deserved what was coming to them. That's how I grew up anyway. Don't say it if you're not going to back it up and be ready to fight.

"Yo' Mama is so fat, she can't twist her torso!"

Nope, never saw trash-talking as a problem.

I trash-talked someone on MWO, but that was a teammate and it was at the beginning of a match: "I hope, you know how to use that Atlas." He did.

Hey, "All's fair in love and war." That being said, assuming same play ability, who would you rather play with: the guy that is generally polite and helpful to his teammates and respectful to his foes? Or the guy that makes a lot of unnecessary and negative noise in comms/chat?

If it adds anything to the game, it is negativity. It's just rudeness. You know it and I know it. Just because it is present in sports and pro athletes do it, doesn't mean it is a good thing. Many athletes take performance enhancing drugs and are womanizers or worse. Should we emulate that behavior, too? If trash talking is fun for you, what does that say about your character?

Also, to me, saying "GG" at the end of a ROFLstomp comes across as rudely sarcastic because it wasn't a good game. Instead, maybe offer advice on how they can learn to do better. Ask them to try dropping with your unit so you can show them some stuff. Politely link them to a good youtube tutorial you know about. Or just refrain from rubbing their loss in their noses.
