"We are playing for Frags"

"Competitive Gaming is a sport and should be treated with the same respect as a professional sport"

This is the core understanding needed to balance any multiplayer versus video game.

I don't think one can claim that "Competitive Gaming is a sport and should be treated with the same respect as a professional sport".

Even among professional sports there are some that are well respected and pay big bucks to athletes and others that are not watched as the general public has little interest. Competitive Gaming only deserves whatever level of interest that spectators are willing to give it.

Finally, by definition I think that Competative Gaming says it all ... it's a game, not a sport. Like Chess, Poker or Backgammon all oh which can be played for money and (within certain circles) fame.

Lol, be treated like a sport? Yeah, you breaking a sweat there, while clicking your mouse and sitting in a chair.

Fat guys laying on the floor shooting guns is a sport too..

Chess and poker aren't called "sports" because they don't require any hand eye coordination, muscle memory and reflexes among other things. But poker is still is on the cable sports networks and MWO deserves the same respect.

Its really sad many of you feel this way because Saying its not a sport is the same as confessing you don't respect the game. I wonder if most of you are just sore losers or if its just a sign of the times of what type of people are left online. This among all the complaints about not enough timely content and 500 dollar gold mechs is really selfish. Most of you shouldn't be playing competitive mutliplayers in the first place, let alone selfishly ruining it for everybody else. You'll never understand what balance is and I really worry about this games future.

I guess MWO is also going to get what it deserves then according to you? ;)

I really don't think it is PGI's fault this game is unpopular. Its always the community that makes or breaks games in the end no matter what a developer does. And I happen to think the game is awesome, especially for being f2p and not p2w and having a matchmaker.

But the core playerbase of this game might of already dug its grave and I wonder why some of you are still here. To selfishly make sure the casket drops I guess because you resent the fact you suck or its not a coop or singleplayer rpg.

The precise definition of what separates a sport from other leisure activities varies between sources. The closest to an international agreement on a definition is provided by SportAccord, which is the association for all the largest international sports federations (including association football, athletics, cycling, tennis, equestrian sports and more), and is therefore the de facto representative of international sport.
SportAccord uses the following criteria, determining that a sport should:
  • have an element of competition
  • be in no way harmful to any living creature
  • not rely on equipment provided by a single supplier (excluding proprietary games such as arena football)
  • not rely on any "luck" element specifically designed into the sport
They also recognise that sport can be primarily physical (such as rugby or athletics), primarily mind (such as chess or go), predominantly motorised (such as Formula 1 or powerboating), primarily co-ordination (such as billiard sports), or primarily animal-supported (such as equestrian sport)

There's not much sweat-breaking in the internationally recognized sports of chess or billiards either, is there? Simply put, sweat is not a necessary ingredient in a sport.

OK, I'm going to interject here based on some arguements that I've had with my friends. There are three levels of "gamesmanship"
  • Activity: This is anything that you can do by yourself where no score is kept and/or there is no judging.
  • Competition: This is any activity where there is a winner decided by points or by judges. Competitions are generally one on one matches, one vs many, or one team at a time style formats where there is no physical interaction between players.
  • Sports: These are competitions involving a ball (or puck for you Cannucks), a team, and one side physically attempting to prevent the other team from scoring. Games are decided by a total number of points within a given time period.
So, as you can see, on-line game is NOT a sport because there is no physical contact and no ball is involved. It would be listed as a competition, though. And, for those that do things like Golfing or enjoy watching NASCAR, sorry, those aren't sports.

SportAccord, "the umbrella organisation for all (Olympic and non-Olympic) international sports federations as well as organisers of multi-sports games and sport-related international associations" (http://en.wikipedia....iki/SportAccord), disagrees with you and your friends. Neither physical contact nor a ball or puck is required for a sport.

Bleh! They're a bunch of weirdos. Anyone that considers equestian riding, golf of anyt type, and motorized activies (xgames, funny car, NASCAR, etc) to be sports are just wrong. So sayeth the Traug! ;)

I have a feeling they are vastly outnumbered. Looking at the activities they promote I am not sure they could fill a bathtub. Though Fistball might have an audience on the web.

So Presently MW:O Cannot be a Sport as it relies on the luck of the draw in our Matchmaking system.

12-man could.

Edit: Or rather, private matches could, when those arrive.

In order for a sport to succeed it requires "all things being equal" in that no participant or team of participants are able to obtain and or bring to the field of competitive play a marked advantage that the opposing team does not have access to or prior notice of that "thing" being brought to the field of play.

In short... while individual player skillset may vary, the core mechanics / environment needs to be 100% equal.

If / When MW:O allows for matches to be hosted and that host can define the match limits therein, MW:O cannot be taken seriously as a competitive e-sport.

Touche'.
Now as to the Luck...
How can boxing be a sport if the boxer on the ropes can win a match with one lucky punch?

Chess and poker are not a sports. Billiards is. Because once again it requires hand eye coordination and muscle memory.

Again, shooting guns is a sport also. So is Driving a car....etc..

Poker is not a sport because it does not require Hand Eye Coordination, Or Muscle Memory.

Just like kids playing with random teamates in the park, it changes nothing. Can this community get anymore nerdy? hahaha.

Traug, spend a 4 hour shift in any class of car during an endurance race and then come back here to tell us how there is no physical effort or skill involved and how motorsports are not a Sport. ;)
