I've heard numerous people say it is, but how? What makes MechWarrior: Online a massively multiplayer online game? While it is certainly "online", and "multiplayer", I don't see the "massively". To my understanding, that requires a large number of players being able to interact together at the same time, a la World of Warcraft or Planetside. Granted what constitutes a "large number" is flexible, in my mind 24 players in a 12 vs. 12 match doesn't quite qualify. Simply having a large number of players playing at a time doesn't count if they're split up into (relatively) small matches. If it did, then games like Halo or Counter Strike would also be MMOs.

Because it will allow massive amounts of players to play and interact at the same time.

I don't remember anyone calling it an MMO.

How? Unless I've missed something, interaction is limited to 24 at a time.

24 fighting over a single piece of turf in a giant turf war. The only thing Massive is that there's a built in persistent universe. That's it though.

This, essentially. If it wasn't that there was the overarching persistent universe that is affected by player actions, I wouldn't say it was an MMO. However, since a massive amount of players (hopefully) will be able to affect the universe at large, albeit rather indirectly (sometime after launch), I would say MWO will just squeak into the definition.

I would also accept this; However, M.M.O.(G.)= Massive Multiplayer Online (Game*)
*Game is normally forgotten entirely.

I would also say that MW|O also falls into the MMO-RP-G category as they have explained that Role Warfare is going to play a big part in the lives of Each pilot.

** Edit: To clarify, 12vs12 in a single match with (for the sake of argument) Hundreds of matches going on simultaneously. If we add up the possibility that there is anything from 4vs4 to 12vs12 then we can easily extend the number of possible active players at any given time.

That is just my angle of observation.

still theres supposed to be more to it when the thing gets really going o.o they have the plot to work with ... its not all about the battles after all ... tho thats prolly what will take up the time for most players =3... that makes it mmo to me =3 but you could argue that its just multiplayer online too

tho if thats all it is then it would make the house/merc aspect pointless =3 might as well just have everyone stay lone wolf cos its just mech combate sim them

I think we got some people thinking MMO stands for Massively Matchmaking Online.

In most MMOs I've played, I generally see only a handful of other players, except for when I'm in "central" areas. Most players will be in private instances.

If I can spend most of my time with 2-4 other players (or solo) in a private dungeon and have it be an MMO, then I'd say that MWO, which will always have two teams of twelve players fighting each other in a persistant online universe count's as an MMO.

well what happens in the grand scheme of things when a merc group takes a planet, the whole universe is effected and every mech pilot in it is also effected, a constant evolving of the game, so everytime you come online to play things will not be as you left them, therefore every player has the ability to effect even players that are not online, is that MMO?
I say yes
:)

To my understanding, MMO's require a Persistent World where what you do in the game has an effect in the World. What you did yesterday, effects what you do today. With the map that will be coming in, each planet will have a number of battles to win in order for one of the Houses to claim it. In that way, the battle lines will flex and change on a consistent basis. Thus, the MMO aspect. It takes LARGE numbers of people to make the change.

Thanks,
Marko
