This is the icon for the Warhorn. It is an antenna with waves coming out.

Hypothesis:
The antenna suggests to me that the warhorn is comms related, and the waves emitting from it is the result of sending a signal.

Given the amount of possibilities that this could be, I suspect that this device will likely be used to ping yourself on teammates minimap when you need help, followed by an audible warhorn sound. It could potentially make use of the ray-tracing feature from your reticle to place a HUD marker pointing to the targeted location. This can help players warn other lance or team mates without being the commander of either. No order will be given, but it can be used effectively to draw the attention of others to areas of greater threat.

Likely similar to a spotting feature that is used in Hawken. At the press of a button, it lays a red blip in the minimap and an icon in the HUD to show the area where an enemy as been spotted. The advantages of this help players communicate quickly without the need to type; something that PGI is working towards, along with mention about a command wheel to easily command or communicate with your team.

Some things in question:
However, one downfall is that there is no positional audio in MWO(surround).

Quote

Due to various issues the sounds are currently mono. This should be addressed soon.
July 26th 2013, from a support ticket.
Only effect that exists is a a crude version of muffled sounds based off proximity, and stereo effects per individual sound. You will not be able to tell in which direction the Warhorn was used.
Also, we aren't sure yet if Warhorns are Clan specific or not; I made the assumption that it is not.

TBH, it sounds to me like a consumable, so it's actual value make it technically worthless (like a cheap throw in item).

On the other hand, if it's not a consumable and this isn't available to the masses, "P2W" screaming is inevitable.

In any case, not knowing what it does or how it works makes the object "a novelty item" that has no value unless official information is provided.

Not having any official announcement on what this reward or others are is very amateur. If you are selling an item with a bonus gift then the consumer should be informed on what specifically the item is. Those that have purchased these have no clue on what these items are, and those that purchased very early on had no clue on how these Mechs/Tech were to be implemented. By BattleTech lore the Clan Tech and Mech's have always been far superior to the Inner Sphere. The restriction was that they had a twisted honor system that tied their hands while their enemy's were not restricted in tactics or numbers in a battle.

Once again the issue here is an inexperienced and non-professional Public Relations and Marketing team. So many of the issues over the last year and the massive drop in player base will go back to these two things. The other is the slow development and massive under staffing. Please PGI replace your PR and Marketing teams and replace them with one that will actively work to regain the confidence of your community. You do have the framework in the game to constantly run events yet these have been ignored. The community has a high priority of custom games (own private games) to run its own community based events. The game is only the facilitator to your communities enjoyment. If it is not there your community will leave further.

Warhorns will more than likely just be a horn like you get in a car. You press a button, it makes a noise. Nothing fancy.

@russ_bullock can you enlighten me (us) what a war horn is? Something like a car horn? Or something like a reinforcement call?

Posted ImageRuss Bullock@russ_bullockJan 9
@IqfishLP Better to ask @bryanekman or @Paul_Inouye but I think they will be doing command posts of course as soon as they are able.

@russ_bullock @IqfishLP @bryanekman Not my area but I do believe it's like a car horn.

It is highly likely that it will sound like a vuvuzela (I don't imagine it sounding like anything else really).

What about the unique modules?

And are the Clan pack modules and warhorns the same as the ones the gold mech owners get?

Speculation: Could be a Sound or Kerensky Verse spoken that Boosts buffs defense or Offensive capability for short brief stint. Like Bloodlust in Warcraft 2. Or Finest Hour Perk in Sins of a Solar Empire. Riles up Rallies and Motivates the clanners in Battle. 15 seconds deals out better damage or 15 seconds deflects more damage. Warhorn Acts Like ECM shroud ICON radius or total team or Lance related But Buffs. Could be tons of different ones. Jade falcon Warhorn Increases LRM damage with a saying verse to team or lance : verse about attacking from the sky! Ghost Bear Buff to auto cannon with a verse about Those that have earned the Mauling Ghost Bear Blood name Blood rite . Smoke Jaguar War Horn that Boosts Medium lasers damage simulating a clawing of the cat. Wolf War horn that Buffs SRMs and a quote about stalking prey or stealth!.

No way in hell will they be consumables. That wound be suicide for ANY company, in almost any industry

1. Name one single use only item from any pre-order package an any game that did not result in a shitstorm of truly epic proportion, without instantly killing the game. When people buy things, they want to keep them, ESPECIALLY if there was never even the slightest indication they could suddenly be taken away forever.

This is like buying a whopper, and as soon as it`s on your tray and you take a bite a BK employee comes along and removes the pickle, or the tomato, or....

The notion itself practically redefines "Bad for Business".

2. Consumables are modules, warhorns are (tentatively) not. This means more work (implementing a new mechanic), and more wasted breath on the forums (players whining about said mechanic AND about the cost of the IMBA W4rh0rnZ "that you have to always have".), for a net benefit of Zero to the game or PGIs bottom line.

PGI makes some questionable decisions, but I do not think that intentional premiditated wasting of time and money is one of them. They (like most other companies) can already do that more than well enough without doing it on purpose and cutting into theor christmas bonus. :)

This is PGI we're talking about here. You know they're going to make them consumables anyway. Enjoy the ride to hell while you can. :)

I`m already there, we`re actively communicating with Russ that we don`t WANT their souls (yet), and that this is a bad idea for that reason among others

Out of interest what makes you so certain that they are? I ask because PGI have all but confirmed that warhorns will be nothing more than a cosmetic "car horn".

I'm going to guess that they are a way for Clan pilots to mark targets for themselves. Throwing down the gauntlet and warning off other clanners.

IS pilots wont care but possibly clan pilots take XP or cash hits for attacking another players marked target? Clan pilots get bonuses to XP and/or cash for using them and getting the kill (mostly) un-aided.

Just a guess and kinda a bare bones idea. But maybe?
