I've never understood why people hated this map so much. But then, I've always run at least semi-fast and low-heat builds. Tonight, on a lark, I decided to skill out the 'phract. I've never run anything over 65 tons; I just wanted to try something new. So I bought my first. Building it was fun! So liberating to have tonnage to play around with!
Then I took it out to test on Terra Therma... sweet Jesus but that thing's a pig. SLLLOOOWWW. This game is not meant to be played at 60kph. And heat? Forget it. All those awesome guns just melt on this map. I spent far more time trudging along and shutting down than I did shooting the dummies.
Granted, the Testing Grounds don't take into account your skills, but this is not the map for many big-guns on a slow mech. So I see why people hate this map. The solution, rather than get rid of a map that others may enjoy, is to build faster and cooler.

This. The distinction between Mordor and Caustic is that on Caustic if you go around the rim, there is a decent chance that you will either run into or at least BE ABLE TO SEE at least one enemy. When Mordor first came out (before everyone started going to the center) if you took the wrong side path you could go forever before seeing an enemy.
In a light mech that isn't as big of a problem, but in a slow assault the phrase "mech hiking simulator" really comes into focus...
Now, I've gotten used to it, and have even grown fond of Mordor- But it isn't a big mystery why some people don't like it- and it isn't JUST people who can't manage their heat or insist on Leeroy Jenkinsing (and come on, LJing is fun sometimes).
