If you check the stomp thread look who came right out to defend the practice.
I don't see anyone defending anything, they've been stating the circumstances in which they use it, which is what I was interested in finding out, it's very much a curiosity to me as I first saw the practice kick in about 15 years ago in other online shooters but it seems to have evolved a little since then in people's eyes, including mine. It's a sociological curio specific to an online gaming environment.
BTW: I premade and pug about equally, and don't "gg" in either. Similarly I have friends and teammates who use it in particular circumstances (like say, 12 mans only) or like me, don't use it at all, as well as some who seem to use it in every game as far as I can tell. It's not a construct that you can really build a strawman from as it seems like a very individual thing from what we can see so far.
Ultimately I'm interested in whether its the case that it is now about individual interpretation, or if it remains some kind of generic "thanks for the game" statement, or if it has taken on some other common meaning.

Ah and here we are. Nowhere did this thread mention 'premades' and yet you do. Like two oceans they are - 'premades' and 'PUGs', constantly battling against each other, and constantly refusing to understand each others problems. Maybe you should try to quench your hate towards premades and stop seeing everyone who says 'GG' to you as a vile premade PUG-stomper. GG-close is done by solo PUG players just as much, and just as 'premades' for either reason - being polite or insulting.
Not everyone is doing GG-close to insult.

Type 'GJ!' in team chat when I win, had fun, and my team did well.
Type 'GG?' when I have no idea how the kill score ended up as 0-12.

You miss the point. Once it becomes an insult to many its taken that way most of the time. Many phrases and gestures have done the same throughout history.

If i'm spectating and it's not over yet - but close - I will say something like "Whatever happens guys, it's been a GG"
If we won in a stomp I say nothing (I think a GG is condescending in this situation). If we won, but I respected the efforts of the opposition I will say "Well played guys, unlucky".

If you feel your team did really well but the enemy team wasn't up to scratch, then a "gj" in team chat will do.
Genuine GGs are rare. Don't dilute the meaning.

Gesture is just a gesture, phrase is just a phrase. I take no insult from the gesture on your pic. Does that make me a fascist? Hopefully not. Does that mean I approve of fascism? Certainly not.
Only meaning behind a certain gesture or phrase makes it insulting or something else. Show that picture to a 6 year old kid who has no knowledge of fascism and ask him what he thinks and he'll tell you he sees a class of kids who raise their hands in greeting or maybe showing that they know an answer to a question teacher asked them. Yet to you this gesture is insulting, because you know of that other ugly meaning for it, the history behind it.
Now imagine you find yourself lost deep in jungle and a wild tribe finds you. Then you perform a simple gesture meaningless to you (like scratching your neck) or a gesture with certain meaning (like shaking hands) and suddenly realize that this simple gesture makes tribesmen hostile towards you. It might just be that that simple gesture means something very different for them, something important that they all know of and can't imagine how somebody might not know of. So there you are, scratching your back and insulting their gods and their ancestors. Does that make you 'evil'?
You can never tell what meaning a person is putting is his words, gestures etc. It is hard to understand sometiems in real life when meeting face to face, harder still on the internet.
You and only you choose what insults you and what not. I'm only saying that GG-close does not automatically mean a person is trying to insult you. 'Many' and 'others' must not dictate you what you should think, if someone is insulted by something it is their choice.

If anyone is offended by me writing GG WP, then... I would sincerely recommend a change of attitude.

The team would group up and find the enemy, at which point I would heroically charge over the hill with the team actually following me. The resulting brawl would be truly epic, surrounded by lasers and missiles and exploding mechs in an epic all in shootout to the death. It would end with me damaged yet still alive and loaded with adrenalin, I would plug GG into the chat because it was epic.
Then the final score board would turn up and I would see that all the exploding mechs were on the other team and it was a 12:0 stomp.
I have since stopped wishing people 'GG'.
The matches I've had where the situation you described comes up, are always amazing games.
The thing is, 12 - 0 Doesn't mean much. It does if the other team has 300 damage shared between 12 guys, But I've had plenty of matches that were 12 - 0 up to 12 - 4, Sure it LOOKS like a stomp, But you can't always tell how badly damaged your own team is.
I've had many a match where my team wins, and I'm effectively a smoldering wreck with a CT and a leg left, and my Lance mates are all sub 30% integrity.
I kind of wish we had an integrity readout on the scoreboard. So you could see that although you won with no deaths, more than half your team was about to die.

So true. This game has a lot of variables: random maps, random crit, random starting positions and 100s of mech build combinations. However except for the all functional AC + PPC combos, a large portion of a team's success is luck of the draw.

If it's a close match, either when we win or lose:
Parappaman<All> gg
If we stomp the other side:
Parappaman<Team> gj team
If my team gets stomped, all I do is lower my head and go cry in a corner with my wrecked mech's company.

I think I might go with "Thanks everyone!"...
But is this actually a game balance topic? Doesn't this belong into

I couldn't really find a good fit for it, as its more about the players than the game itself. So I put it in Gameplay Balance as its the closest we have to a general discussion area. If it gets moved by mods or whatever, no big deal.

Heh, of course I was really cheesed off and quite inflammatory that day. Suppose I got what was coming to me.
ANYWAYS.
I'm in the camp who feels that the types who plug in 'gg' after every single match regardless of the outcome or, indeed, basic goodness of the match in question have robbed the gesture of any (positive) meaning. Much the same with 'glhf' or its variations. It's a thing players do by rote, because it's expected of them, not because they actually feel these things. it's very much the same as a young child instructed by their parents to say things like "Please", "Thank You", and "Sorry" - these platitudes are meaningless from the mouth of the child. It's rendered even worse because Internet demi-trolls spewing this stuff don't even have the shield of being (actually) immature and still learning to assign proper meaning to the terms yet tro hide behind. They just do it because they figure it absolves them of all need for actual sportsmanship. If you can't actually find the time to put into words phrases such as "Good fight, all", or "Oh well. Good work anyways" or another variation which shows that you actually paid attention to the match, then keep your gob shut and quit insulting other players with your false surface veneer of sportsmanship.
Mustrum: after I've been stomped, I would honestly prefer for the opposing team to just disconnect in silence. Anything you say can and will be interpretted as gloating on the Internet. It's an unfortunate state of affairs, but it's how things are. That's my opinion, at least - a team which just disconnects and moves on is, at the least, not actively insulting you the way a flood of 'GG's from the winning team is in a 12-2 rolling.

Now when it gets personalized and directed to someone or a known merc corp on the other end then it actually has meaning.
Otherwise, it one of those things that people mindlessly do.
I only use it directing it specifically to people or corps I know or have relation.

Now, when someone in MWO says Bg, in tennis it would simply be unsportsmanship player that just leaves without the handshake.
In addition, I've seen some people saying Gg easy. This is propably the highest offence, regardless of the score (doesn't matter if it really was easy). In tennis it would mean first shaking the hand of the opponent and then spitting him to his face. Don't do that either.
